Selly Manor Museum is an independent museum. We look after two listed buildings - Selly Manor, a Tudor yeoman's house, and Minworth Greaves, a medieval hall house. Our current priority is to diversify and engage audiences who do not visit the museum. We have evidence that a low proportion of our visitors are Black or Black British. Whilst this is representative of the communities immediately surrounding the museum, it isn't representative of Birmingham City as a whole. We hope that more people from a wider range of backgrounds and experience will see this exhibition and think 'museums are for me and represent me and my history'. We want to work with individuals who are unrepresented voices in our collections. By creating artworks of Black Tudors for temporary display, to add new layers of interest to the stories we tell and introduce new ideas and themes to our visitors. Artwork will be based on evidence of more than 200 people of African origin or descent living in Britain during the Tudor period (1485-1603), which has been researched by Dr Miranda Kaufmann. The exhibition will be 26th January - 22nd March.
