Artist Commission, Selly Manor Museum (Bournville Village Trust)

Description

Job Summary

Selly Manor Museum is offering four paid artist commissions in celebration of Black Tudors. We are looking for artists aged between 18 and 25, who are of Black Heritage, and live or study in the Midlands.

Job Description

Selly Manor Museum is an independent museum. We look after two listed buildings - Selly Manor, a Tudor yeoman's house, and Minworth Greaves, a medieval hall house.

Our current priority is to diversify and engage audiences who do not visit the museum. We have evidence that a low proportion of our visitors are Black or Black British. Whilst this is representative of the communities immediately surrounding the museum, it isn't representative of Birmingham City as a whole. We hope that more people from a wider range of backgrounds and experience will see this exhibition and think 'museums are for me and represent me and my history'.

We want to work with individuals who are unrepresented voices in our collections. By creating artworks of Black Tudors for temporary display, to add new layers of interest to the stories we tell and introduce new ideas and themes to our visitors.

Artwork will be based on evidence of more than 200 people of African origin or descent living in Britain during the Tudor period (1485-1603), which has been researched by Dr Miranda Kaufmann.

The exhibition will be 26th January - 22nd March.

  • 4 artist commission opportunities
  • You will receive a development session supported by our partner, Black Arts Forum, and Pogus Caesar, an established artist, during which you will reflect on your developing practice.
  • We want you to create artworks that will surprise and engage diverse audiences. The artworks should draw on the biographies of the Black Tudors, using artistic practice to intrigue and offer people deeper and new ways of understanding their lives and experiences.
  • All materials required to create the piece must be included in the commission fee of £765. When creating the piece, you must consider the size of the rooms in Selly Manor.
  • We have no preconception around artform or process, and we do not expect you to be an expert in Tudor history or Selly Manor.
