Assistant Director - The Key, Theatre Royal Plymouth

Theatre Royal Plymouth are looking for a number of Assistant Directors to support performance & design groups taking part in a large-scale community production.

This summer marks the 21st birthday of our Production & Learning Centre, TR2. Over the

years, this building has seen the evolution of countless sets, productions and personal


Inspired by the tradition of giving a key to celebrate a 21st birthday, and interwoven with

William Shakespeare's great coming-of-age play The Tempest, The Key is an immersive

theatre, music and dance experience featuring a cast of over 100 performers from across

the organisation.

Young people aged 8 - 21 will create and perform in our latest production, The Key. We are seeking dynamic, creative & caring Assistant Directors to support both the Director and the young people participating in this project.

The Assistant Directors will work closely with the Directors leading each group in the creating this new production. Opportunities are available to work within the following areas:

  • Acting groups for 8-11 year olds
  • Acting groups for 11- 14 year olds
  • Acting groups for 15 - 21 year olds
  • Acting groups for SEND young people
  • Musical Theatre groups for 11 - 18 year olds
  • Movement (physical theatre) groups for 11- 18 year olds
  • Theatrical Design groups for 11 - 18 year olds


Rehearsals will take place across two weeks, exact dates for each group will differ. Assistant Directors may only be called for one of the weeks below:

Monday 29 July - Friday 02 August

Monday 05 August - Friday 09 August

Everyone will be called for the full production week:

Monday 12 August - Saturday 17 August

Job Requirements


  • A minimum of 2 years experience working in theatre OR studying theatre, or related subjects
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A commitment to working in an inclusive and accessible manner
  • A passion for delivering high quality work opportunities for young people

Job Responsibilities

Job Brief

  • Input into creative decisions with the Director leading each group, considering the ages and capacity of the companies, with scope and space for all company members to be challenged and inspired
  • Have an understanding of the rehearsal plan each day, created by your groups Director
  • Be prompt with communications with TRP (by email or by phone) responding to questions in good time
  • Taking the register each week and ensuring participants leave the workshops safely
  • Preparing the space and ensuring all equipment necessary for the workshop is to hand
  • Support the delivery of workshops & rehearsals
  • Lead on warm-ups or short exercises, when necessary, as agreed with, and supported by, your groups Director
  • Provide a safe space where participants can perform and try things that may feel very new and sometimes scary
  • Be adaptable and person-centred in your support both to the participants and of the Director leading your group
  • Be flexible in your role within the production,
