Deputy Head of Lighting, Royal Opera House

In one of two deputy roles, you will be jointly responsible for the ROH Production Lighting, Lighting Control and Visualisation, Follow spots and Lighting Systems teams. You will work on the management of all Technical & Artistic Lighting operations for the ROH, including co-productions and hires, for stages in Covent Garden and on tour, and deliver this safely and effectively within agreed resources and budgets.

You will have responsibility for both new productions and revivals, liaising closely with lighting designers to realise/recreate their vision and manage those creative relationships. As well as being a subject matter expert in lighting, you will need to have a proven track record at management level with a major producing venue or organisation and be able to demonstrate strong leadership qualities. You will be an ambassador for the Lighting Department, as well as the broader Technical, Production and Costume team across the ROH as well as externally.

Our ideal candidate will be able to evidence:

  • An excellent track record in theatre lighting management for major professional productions or companies.
  • The ability to work to exceptional artistic standards, both recreating lighting for productions and taking creative concepts and realising them in practical terms.
  • Excellent technical skills with a thorough understanding of current lighting equipment and systems and the implications of new product developments
  • Developed management skills including the ability to coach and mentor as well as project manage and own budgets and resourcing plans.
  • The ability and commitment to foster a culture of continuous improvement and a strong team ethic
  • Honed and well-developed relationship building skills, with an ability to engage with both technical and creative stakeholders.
