Researcher - School Engagement with Arts Provision, Basildon Borough Council

Description

Job Summary

To increase our understanding of the needs, opportunities and challenges with Basildon schools’ and alternative provision engagement with creative and cultural opportunities for their staff and children and young people, we are seeking a researcher to conduct an in-depth study.

Job Description

A new Culture and Creative Industries strategy for Basildon has been launched in Basildon, and positions culture as a catalyst and connector for community and economic life.

Alongside this, Arts Council England has identified Basildon as one of 54 Priority Places across England for investment and engagement. As part of this work, an objective has been set to better understand how schools in the borough currently engage with arts and cultural opportunities. The borough includes five towns, these being: Basildon, Billericay, Wickford, Pitsea, and Laindon.

This study will seek to put together as complete a picture as possible of school engagement with arts opportunities provided by local, regional and national cultural organisations. The aim, to gain insight into the local education ecology and the needs, barriers and opportunities for increasing children and young people's (CYP) access to arts, culture and the wider creative industries. The ambition; to have wider stakeholders embedded into the work to promote partnership working and sustainability of work. This work will better enable partners to develop cultural opportunities for schools and alternative education facilities in Basildon Borough that are relevant to educational needs and capitalise on local opportunities and infrastructure.

We are working in partnership with Arts Council England and Royal Opera House on this study to bring our collective experience together. We know that tackling problems of low engagement in arts is difficult which is why we want to take time now to understand the landscape and have discussion with those working with children and young people in the borough.
