Job Summary

OperaUpClose is looking for a Technician for our new production of Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea which will premiere at MAST Mayflower Studios, Southampton on 30th January 2025 before a nationwide tour in February 2025.

Job Description

This role is ideally suited to a Technician with a lighting and projection bias. The Technician will report to the Production Manager and the Executive Producer. The stage management and technical team on tour will consist of the Stage Manager, Sound Technician and a Technician. The Production Manager will also be present at the first venue to oversee the get-in. The ideal candidate will have experience in lighting design and projection technology for touring productions. You will be responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining lighting and projection equipment on the road, ensuring exceptional show quality at every venue.

Fee

£669.50/week = £3,347.50

Equivalent to 5 week's work, covering:

  • Studio rehearsals 20th - 25th January 2025 in Southampton
  • Technical rehearsals 27th - 29th January 2025 at MAST Mayflower Studios, Southampton
  • Touring 30th January - 3rd March 2025

The technician may also be needed for a couple of days of prep and to help with returns and will be renumerated for their time.

Travel and accommodation payments in line with ITC rates will be paid.

Job Requirements

Skills and experience:

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience in relevant professional roles, particularly in small to mid-scale touring theatre.
  • Demonstrable experience with lighting and projection.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • A team player with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels both internally and externally.
  • Able to cope with the demands of working flexibly for the hours that theatre and touring inevitably calls for.

Desirable

  • First Aid Qualification.
  • Experience driving large vans
  • Fire Safety trained
  • Experience in opera and/or musical theatre.
  • Experience working with creative captioning

Job Responsibilities

Technical rehearsals and Touring

  • Work closely with the production manager and designer to implement lighting and projection designs that enhance performances, adapting to different venue specifications as needed.
  • Oversee the get-in and installation of all lighting and projection elements of the production at each venue, directing venue staff and making relevant changes, as needed; ensuring optimal performance and adherence to safety standards.
  • Provide on-site technical support during events, managing lighting cues and projections in real-time, and troubleshooting any issues that arise during performances.
  • Be the front-line point of contact at all venues and liaise with venue staff to facilitate get-ins and get-outs.
  • Share the driving of a Long Wheel-base Transit van (or similar) between venueswhile on tour.
