Job Requirements

Character Description and Arc
Mary is an ageless, force of nature. Eternally vigilant in the house she came to as a young woman, she has now spent so long seated in darkness her skin has welded to the sofa on which she sits. Throughout the course of the play, which is a single argument instigated by an unexpected, haunting visitation at the door, she must wrestle with life, death, family, duty, love, hate, and the brutal act of childbirth. Think Miss Havisham, if she survived the fire…

Job Responsibilities

Character
Brutally sharp, unvanquishable, physically frail yet with an iron will, she has spent her entire life serving the men in her family. Despite her bitterness, a deep, frightening streak of love and protectiveness runs through her.

Notes
The actor must sustain a series of long, emotionally layered monologues. Her development runs from bitter recrimination, to haunted premonition, to prophetic disembodied vision, to heartbroken loss and release. Initially a radio piece, so voice is key; should be sharp as ice.
