We are currently recruiting for one Art Handling Technicians to support the delivery of Tate programme and make sure that standards are maintained for object packing, handling, movement, documentation, storage and display. The roles will be based at Tate Stores (Southwark and Wiltshire) and across Tate's other sites.

You will be able to demonstrate practical experience and technical skills that will give you the ability to problem solve prioritising the care, installation and movement of art works.

You will have an adaptable attitude, great communication skills and enjoy working flexibly as part of a team, committed to getting the job done. We will provide a full equipment training programme, including all technical certifications required, to enable you to work within the Tate's standard.

The position is offered as:

  • Part-time (0.6 Monday to Wednesday) fixed-term contract until 31 March 2028

The salary for this role is £16,710 per annum (pro rata to the full-time equivalent £27,851 per annum).

Job Requirements

  • Practical experience in art handling.
  • Demonstrable technical skills withing a museum/gallery environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively and confidently at all levels, internally and with external contacts.
  • A practical and pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
  • Highly organised with the ability to prioritise and co-ordinate tasks in order to meet deadlines while staying calm under pressure.
  • Willingness to learn new skills.
  • A good understanding of best working practices and health and safety requirements.
  • Willing to work with flexibility between storage locations and work out of hours where required.
  • Awareness of, and commitment to the issues of equality and cultural diversity as they affect the work of a major museum.

Job Responsibilities

  • Handling art works in the course of movement, storage, packing and installation/de-installation in the galleries and at Stores.
  • Providing a range of technical skills to support the installation/de-installation of exhibitions and displays.
  • Working internally with colleagues across Tate, and externally with artists and other parties in the delivery of the exhibitions and displays.
  • Processing and completing appropriate documentation (e.g. condition/packing and unpacking reports, documenting location art records following Tate procedure).
  • General cleaning and maintaining of art works.
  • Complying at all times with security, conservation and health and safety requirements.
  • Keeping up to date with current Health & Safety working practises for use of equipment. This will include taking responsibility for ensuring the safe use and maintenance of equipment in storage and galleries areas in accordance with Health & Safety Regulations and maintaining a clean and tidy working environment.
