Job Description

We are looking to recruit a socially engaged Artist-in-Residence to come to live and work in Barrow-in-Furness for one year from April 2025 to March 2026. You will have a strong interest in community arts and work as part of a dedicated team, with the capacity to multitask and work collaboratively.

You should have at least 4 years' experience of socially engaged practice that centres on or includes dance and/or movement and be ready for the challenge of an exciting new year-long role in Barrow-in-Furness.

We are looking for a brilliant person who likes making exciting, creative things happen and supporting people to develop with ideas, skills and creativity.

Your work over the year could include:

  • Taster/Introductory participatory sessions open to all.
  • Targeted work with specific community groups (geographic or communities of interest, identity or background) and responding to the needs and opinions of those communities. Some of the groups of interest to us beyond those beyond geographic communities include Older Adults; Teenagers; Global Majority Families; and Neurodivergent, Learning Disabled Young People and those with Autism.
  • Co-creating new work with Barrovians.
  • Creating work or participatory experiences within key events and moments in BarrowFull's fifth year of delivery - this could include at our Summer Playcations, Winter 2025-26 events & Festival of Colours 2026 amongst others.

Job Requirements

The artist will:

  • Be part of, and lead some, community arts projects across Barrow sharing their practice with the community in Barrow;
  • Build relationships with local organisations and adhere to their protocols and systems;
  • Establish relationships with local associations, groups, education and third-sector organisations and promote the residency project to reach as wide a range of people as possible;
  • Undertake assertive creative outreach in community contexts including schools, colleges, estates, youth groups, community centres, focus groups and faith groups;
  • Monitor and evaluate the activity they work on;
  • Manage project/activity timelines and milestone reporting;
  • Make regular verbal and written reports about the residency's progress;
  • In collaboration with producers, ensure audiences' access needs are met;
  • In collaboration with producers, apply for any relevant permissions and licences
