20-21 Visual Arts Centre is delighted to receive artist proposals to take part in an exciting creative project happening this summer—celebrating imagination, community, and our local identity. We are seeking a freelance artist to propose a workshop inspired by Scunthorpe’s Bear Sculpture Trail.

Job Description

Artist Workshop Facilitator - Family Engagement Programme
North Lincolnshire Council is seeking a creative and experienced Artist Workshop Facilitator to design and deliver a family-friendly arts workshop as part of a cultural trail. This opportunity is ideal for an artist passionate about community engagement, creativity, and inclusive practice.

The selected artist will enter into a formal agreement with North Lincolnshire Council and take responsibility for planning and delivering a full-day interactive workshop (10am-4pm). The workshop should feature hands-on creative activities suitable for families, inspired by the trail and incorporating a visit to a bear sculpture. Activities may include craft, drawing, sculpture, storytelling, digital animation, or collaborative artwork, with the option to explore themes such as environmental awareness, wildlife conservation, and climate change.

The facilitator will create a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for participants of all ages and abilities. Responsibilities include setting up and packing away materials, ensuring accessibility, and working with venue staff to support engagement. Flexibility is essential, as workshops may take place across locations including 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, North Lincolnshire Museum, local libraries, or outdoor public spaces. A lunch break will be included, with catering provided.

Applicants should have a background in art and design or equivalent experience, with a track record of delivering workshops for children, young people, and families. Strong communication, organisation, and facilitation skills are essential, alongside the ability to adapt activities for diverse needs. Candidates must demonstrate high standards of customer care, hold relevant insurance, and complete risk assessments. Basic IT, literacy, and numeracy skills required.

Job Requirements

We are we looking for:

Art and design qualification or an evidenced background working in the creative sector.

Experience of managing and delivering family workshops.

Can teach strong arts, crafts and design skills to community participants of diverse artistic abilities and experience levels.

Good literacy and basic numeracy skills.

Good communication skills.

Must have experience of working with children and young people.

Holds an appreciation for the arts and creative sectors.

Holds IT skills including word processing and email.

Competently complete and supply a risk assessment. Also, hold relevant insurances for working with the public.

A commitment to a high standard of customer care.

Job Responsibilities

The selected artist will:
Sign and complete a contract supplied by North Lincolnshire Council.

Design interactive creative activities suitable for families connecting to the trail.

Deliver one workshop lasting [duration: 1 full day, 10am-4pm].

Create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.

Set up and pack down materials within the allocated time.

Ensure activities are safe and accessible.

Work with venue staff to support participant engagement.

Include a visit to a bear sculpture in your delivery.

Include an allocated lunch break. A picnic lunch will be provided to participants and the artist by 20-21 Visual Arts Centre.

Offer flexibility - you may be asked to deliver your proposed activities in locations other than 20-21 Visual Arts Centre. This may include: outside 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, North Lincolnshire Museum, North Lincolnshire Libraries (Scunthorpe) and Queen Elizabeth Gardens (previously Church Square area).
