Job Summary

Manchester Mid-day Concerts Society seeks an experienced and passionate musician to oversee its lunchtime concert series at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. This is a pivotal role ideal for someone with extensive knowledge of the classical music industry and specifically live classical concerts.

Job Description

This is a consultative role to oversee the artistic content of the Society's concert season.

The Artistic Consultant is responsible to the Society's Committee of Trustees and will work in close partnership with the Concert Programme Manager.

The role requires approximately 15 days per year to be worked around the programming of auditions and concerts.

This is a free-lance position. The role will be paid at £275 per day plus travel expenses paid on receipt of invoices (based on 8 hours per day).

The role can be undertaken from home other than attendance at auditions, concerts and Trustee Committee meetings as required.

Performance of the role will be reviewed by the Chair of the Trustees on an annual basis. The contract will be reviewed every three years.

The Artistic Consultant may also be asked to advise on or participate in other projects which the Society may wish to undertake. These will be in addition to the key responsibilities listed below and will be commissioned and remunerated separately and by agreement with the Trustees.

Job Requirements

The role requires the following skills, expertise and experience:

  • Extensive education and knowledge of the classical music industry and specifically live classical concerts;
  • Wide-ranging contacts and standing in the field of classical music and specifically chamber music, musical education and associated institutions, and the performing arts generally;
  • Demonstrable experience in the production and planning of classical chamber concert series;
  • Experience in engaging, supporting and developing young and emerging artists;
  • Interpersonal and public speaking skills necessary to be the 'public face' of the Society;
  • Excellent written skills.

Job Responsibilities

  • To work closely and collaboratively with Trustees and Concert Programme Manager to deliver an exciting annual concert series;
  • To develop an overarching strategic direction for the concerts season to enable long-term planning;
  • To develop an annual planning strategy with regard to the selection of artists to ensure a balanced programme;
  • Chairing the audition process; fostering relationships to ensure a wide range of applicants; selecting auditionees in partnership with the selection panel; and working with successful artists to finalise programmes;
  • Identifying and selecting non-auditioning artists;
  • Representing the Society and its interests as appropriate;
  • Attendance at Trustee Committee meetings, plus ad hoc planning meetings;
  • Advising on and involvement in ad hoc special projects, such as the Society's composition competition, such projects being commissioned and remunerated separately;
  • To provide guidance and insight to support the delivery of the concert prograramme.
