A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story are looking for a London-based Assistant Director on the 2025 production of Mark Gatiss’ adaptation of Charles Dickens's novel at Alexandra Palace Theatre.

A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story is looking for a London-based Assistant Director to support Emily Oulton (Associate Director) and Adam Penford (Director) on the 2025 production of Mark Gatiss' adaptation of A Christmas Carol at Alexandra Palace Theatre.This is a remount of the Nottingham Playhouse production, following enormously successful runs in 2021, 2023, and 2024.

DATES

Rehearsals: from w/c 20th October 2025

Get in and Tech: from w/c 17th November 2025

First preview: Saturday 22nd November 2025

Press Night: Wednesday 26th November 2025

Final performance: Sunday 4th January 2026

FEE

Audition, Rehearsal and Preview Fee: £3000

Weekly Retainer from w/c 24 November 2025: £300

Job Requirements

WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Previous experience of supporting a director in a resident or assistant director role.
  • Experience working with understudies and children is desirable.
  • Candidates who can be flexible and work well as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Solution-focused candidates who work calmly under pressure.
  • We welcome applications from recent graduates who can demonstrate that they show skill, aptitude and commitment to the role.

Job Responsibilities

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Attending all rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and previews.
  • Lead rehearsals and preparations for the young company.
  • Preparation of understudies.
  • Supporting the Director and Associate Director.
  • Watching and noting one show per week after press night.
  • Maintaining the artistic standard of the Production in conjunction with the Director and Associate Director (seeking the Director's approval where appropriate).
  • Liaising with the Director, Associate Director, Creative Team and Producer.
  • Coordinating and, if necessary, attending post-show discussions and wrap-around events.
