Blackheath Halls is looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Director to join our friendly and committed team, assisting Director Harry Fehr on our 2026 opera, Bizet's Carmen. Duties may include but are not limited to: Helping Harry to facilitate rehearsals with a cast of professional singers and a large inter-generational community chorus Taking notes during rehearsals, including keeping a detailed marked-up vocal score Leading breakout sessions with the Youth Company of young people aged 8-18 Leading drama sessions in our partner specialist schools for students with special educational needs Leading breakout staging sessions with professional principal singers to refine scenes Communicating notes from the Director to the chorus/Youth Company/ principals Being present at all 5 performances Applicants must be eligible to work legally in the UK. The annual Blackheath Halls Opera is a successful project that has been running since 2007. Blackheath Halls Opera is proud of its programme of ambitious and creative opera projects offering people of all ages from across the London boroughs of Greenwich, Lewisham and beyond a unique opportunity to take part in high-quality, live music making alongside a professional cast of soloists and production teams. Our 2025 opera was Gluck's Iphigenia in Tauris, with cast including Francesca Chiejina, Dan Shelvey, Michael Lafferty and Dan D'Souza alongside our community chorus of 50 adults, 30 children from mainstream schools and children from local SEN schools. Reports to: Director (Harry Fehr) and Community Engagement Team (Rose Ballantyne and Kate Howden) Responsible for: n/a Contract: As needed during staging rehearsals from 11 August 2026, through to dress rehearsals and to be present at all 5 performances in the period Sat 19th September 2026 - Sunday 27 September 2026. Attendance is also required at the opera launch date on 11 July 2026.
