Job Summary

Bucket Club are looking for an Assistant Director to work on their new show Arthur, playing at Polka Theatre and The Egg, Theatre Royal Bath.

Job Description

Arthur is a magical new play by Marietta Kirkbride with original songs, based on Arthurian legend and the quest for a better world. It's made for audiences aged 6-12, and is playing in Polka's Y C Chan Theatre this summer before transferring to The Egg, Theatre Royal Bath for Christmas.

The assistant director will work full-time in rehearsals and tech, collaborating with director Nel Crouch and supporting the cast, creative and stage management teams in all aspects of the production.

Fee:

  • £5400, paid as 9 weeks at £600/week, plus 4 show visits across both runs paid at £150/visit.
  • Holiday pay paid at 0.53 days/week

Additionally, Bucket Club will:

  • Provide a bursary of £1000 to spend how you choose on your professional development
  • Provide 6 mentoring/coaching sessions with director Nel Crouch (RD1st qualified coach and previous mentor with the JMK Trust) to be arranged at mutually convenient times throughout 2026.

Job Requirements

Bucket Club, Polka and The Egg are looking for an early career director or theatre-maker with an interest in gaining experience in mid-scale family work, with a base either in London or within commuting distance from Bath.

Job Responsibilities

  • Playing a part in the creative process, understanding the vision of the production and finding opportunities to enrich it during rehearsals
  • Supporting the company with research in rehearsals
  • Attending production meetings
  • Assisting the director as needed. Attending rehearsals, taking notes, and representing the audience in the room. Communicating regularly with the director and offering your own notes and input.
  • Supporting any press or marketing requests.
  • Leading the rehearsal room in emergency situations in which the director is not available.
  • Noting the show on show visits, and feeding notes back to the acting company.
  • In London rehearsals, having an eye on any adaptations that will be needed for the new space at The Egg.
