Role Overview

This role operates on a rota basis (agreed in advance) and requires flexibility to cover sessions when other Assistants are unavailable.

Contract Type: Freelance, Part-Time

Termly Hours: Currently available approx 3 to 4 per week plus cover work for other classes as and when required.

Show days: At least 2 show days/weekends in the academic year which equate to at least 10 hours per day.

School Holidays: Full day workshops in both half term and school holidays which will be between 1 day and 5 days.

Meeting: All staff meeting and/or additional training are paid hours

Fees: £13 per hour plus 9% holiday pay

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will carry out the following duties - and others that may be reasonably required:

  • Support the Drama Facilitator during classes by engaging in drama games and working with children in small groups as directed.
  • Occasionally run drama games, exercises, or small-group activities, with the potential to take the lead when required.
  • Assist in rehearsals and run some rehearsals independently when directed.
  • Help prepare students for annual performances, both creatively and practically.
  • Be available on performance days to assist with technical rehearsals and the production itself.
  • Create an engaging and supportive atmosphere that encourages participation, learning, and creativity.
  • Recognise and respond sensitively to the varying needs of children and young people within the group.
  • Maintain a positive ethos, using drama as a tool for development, confidence-building, and growth.
  • Work effectively as part of the Bristol Academy of Drama (BAD) team.
  • Ensure personal behaviour is always aligned with BAD's Code of Conduct.
  • Prioritise children's wellbeing and follow safeguarding and child protection policies at all times.
  • Undertake any reasonable tasks related to the role as required.
  • Be able to safely evacuate children from the building in case of emergency.
  • Attend termly staff meetings.

Job Requirements

Person Specification

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Clear DBS check on the Update Service - or willingness to apply.
  • Ideally, evidence of experience working with children.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with children empathetically.
  • Supportive and encouraging attitude toward children and young people.
  • Flexibility and willingness to assist the Facilitator with various classroom tasks.
  • Genuine interest in theatre and drama.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and cover additional sessions when needed.
  • Ability to cover other classes if required.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience (or willingness to learn) working backstage in a theatre setting.
  • First aid training - or willingness to undertake training.

Additional Information

  • Hours are based on a rota agreed in advance.
  • Additional hours may be required for cover
