We are looking for an Audio (sound) / Visual artist to engage with young people and families from the local community to create an installation during Signals 2025 that will contribute to the music festival inspired by and exploring the sound and heritage of Catcliffe Glass Cone.

We are looking for an Audio (sound) / Visual artist to engage with young people and families from the local community to create an installation during Signals 2025 that will contribute to the music festival inspired by and exploring the sound and heritage of Catcliffe Glass Cone and surrounding area. This commission will deliver an immersive audio (sound) and visual installation that will:

  • Increase awareness, accessibility, and appreciation of the Glass Cone and surrounding area.
  • Engage key communities and individuals to develop a piece that is representative, relevant, and meaningful to young people and families from the local community.
  • Connect to the aims of Signals 2025 and create an installation that provides a focal point and opportunity to promote the wider music festival.
  • Be inspired by and/or reflect/echo the heritage of the site and its wider connection to the Glass Industry in South Yorkshire.
  • Be inspired by or reflect local people's memories and contemporary experiences of the site
  • Provide a community focal point to create a moment to celebrate the Glass Cone and bring the community together as part of the Signals Festival.

The budget for this commission is £7000. We expect this to be £3500 in artist fees and £3500 for materials.

The artist will be required to be in Rotherham to deliver a series of engagement workshops (Minimum three. Duration, times and dates will depend on local partners) and the installation.

We estimate this being no more than 10 days worth of work (some may be done remotely), plus materials and expenses. The artist will manage the budget appropriately, depending on the art form of the proposed final installation piece.

Deadline for applications: 2nd December

Artist appointed for the briefs: w/c 2nd December

Artist to meet community group and project team to start work developing concept: w/c 9th December

Development/Deliver of commission and engagement programme: w/c 20th January 2025 onwards

Installation: 17-21st February 2025

Job Requirements

The commission will be reviewed by the Museums, Arts and Heritage Team, Rotherham Music Hub, a group of young people and the Catcliffe Cone Community Group.

Your proposal should include the following:

  • Up to 3 relevant examples
  • 2 Referee contact details

Rotherham Museums, Arts & Heritage is committed to ensuring that the opportunities it provides are open and inclusive to all. Submissions will be accepted as:

  • Word or PDF documents which should be 10MB or less and a maximum of six sides A4.
  • Filmed presentations which should be 10MB or less and a maximum of 10 minutes saved in MP4 format

Job Responsibilities

Artists will work alongside young people and families in the community to respond to the site with a final outcome that will be installed physically and delivered inside of the cone. Consideration will need to be given to the physical interior condition and listed status of the monument, location, and local surroundings of the site when developing proposals.

Artists will be required to:

  • Present an outline response/proposal.
  • Work with Rotherham Museums, Arts and Heritage, Rotherham Music Hub, and key groups to gather music/sound, history, stories, connections, memories, and values associated with Catcliffe Cone to inform the final artwork.
  • Provide an appropriate project timeline with key milestones, such as deadlines for consultation, drafts of proposals, technical plan to be able install the audio (music)/visual art commission, risk assessments and a final commission plan.
  • Attend the installation and deliver activities focussed on the installation over 2 to 3 days.
