Job Summary

The Crepuscular Press is seeking an illustrator to complete the book cover design of the sixth and penultimate volume of literary fiction saga The Crooked Little Pieces, which is being published on 2 June 2026.

Job Description

Founded in 2022, TCP is a literary boutique imprint I founded to release aesthetic-focussed fiction and non-fiction. For the moment these have been my works, but I plan to expand the catalogue to others' if the company can grow sufficiently in coming years.

With the exception of one book, The Crooked Little Pieces' covers have so far been designed by the same artist. This illustrator began work on this sixth part in January but has now disappeared, leaving it entirely unfinished.

The Crooked Little Pieces is a twentieth century-set saga that revolves around fraternal twins Anneliese and Isabel. It is a vivid, metaphor-rich novel whose five covers have so far reflected dreamy chaos and surreal scenes. The concept for the Volume 6 cover is set in Moapa Valley, Utah amid buttes and mesas during a road trip.

Due to little time remaining, the illustrator will not be expected to have read the first six volumes of the series prior to commencing work. I will however familiarise the artist with the volumes' central characters and stories and provide a list of chapter summaries.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have a free and flowing artistic style. The must also possess professional experience in the following:

- Oil on canvas
- A range of painted portraits
- Using ProCreate in digital illustration
- Using Adobe Photoshop in digital illustration
- Book cover design

In the past I have assumed the role of art director during the creation of the covers - overseeing application of fine details over Meet and Zoom in the last stages. In order to ensure this sixth design is maximally consistent with the other volumes', the illustrator will be expected to take part in several online meetings working under these conditions. I understand this seems restrictive for some artists but in my experience it's been the quickest, most efficient means to finalise the covers.

For this reason, fluency in English is crucial.

The fee for the cover will be £1400 ($1850). Its front must be completed by midnight (00.00) on 12 May, and its back (including the spine) by midnight (00.00) on 26 May.

Job Responsibilities

There is no set of requisite hours expected per week but candidates will be expected to have contributed around 60 hours overall in the creation of the cover.
