Location: The Grange Festival, Hampshire. Production: Opera, Dance, and Concert Performances. Start Date: 6th May 2026 End Date: 15th July 2026. Fee: £9,420. Accommodation provided if not local to Hampshire. Please note there are no public transport links to the theatre.

Job Description

The Grange Festival is seeking an experienced and creative Chief LX to lead the lighting and electrics department for an exciting season consisting of Operas, Dance performances and Concerts. This role will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the lighting design, installation,operation, and maintenance, ensuring that each production has visually striking lighting that aligns with the artistic vision created during the stage rehearsal period. For the concerts, lighting design may be required, depending on the needs of the performances. The Chief LX will lead a team consisting of two Deputy Chief LX's, managing their work while ensuring all lighting and electrical systems function smoothly throughout the festival.

Job Requirements

Lighting Design and Planning:

  • Collaborate with the Director, Designers, and Production Manager to develop and implement lighting designs that complement the artistic vision for the opera, dance, and concert performances.

  • For concert performances, take an active role in designing the lighting and ensuring it enhances the atmosphere of the music. .

  • Ensure lighting designs align with the overall production budget and technical requirements.

Team Leadership and Management:

  • Lead the lighting department, consisting of two Deputy Chief LX's, ensuring all team members understand their duties and responsibilities for rehearsals, performances, and technical load-ins.

  • Oversee the scheduling and day-to-day management of the lighting team, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and on time.

  • Maintain all lighting equipment throughout the festival season, ensuring regular servicing, inspections, and safety checks.

Job Responsibilities

  • Technical Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of lighting equipment, including moving lights, LED systems, control desks, dimming systems, and power distribution.

  • Proficient with lighting design software.

  • Strong understanding of electrical systems and ability to troubleshoot technical issues quickly during rehearsals or performances.
