Job Summary

To lead on the assessment of the maritime collections at Hull as they return for display at the Maritime Museum, leading on installation of the display collections, procuring additional conservation expertise as required and supervising staff included in the process, deputising for the Curatorial

Job Description

1To supervise and train staff or trainees on temporary placements and volunteers undertaking conservation and preservation work, to ensure that such work is carried out in accordance with recognised professional standards, Health and Safety legislation and COSHH regulations.

2. To assist in the supervision and installation of the Maritime Museum collections for display, supervising staff involved in this process as required

3. To assess the maritime collections at Hull as they return to the museum following a major collections move and redisplay.

4. Work with the Curatorial Project Manager and Curator of Maritime & Social History to identify priority items for conservation.

5. Work with the Volunteer co-ordinator to recruit, manage and deliver any volunteer engagement, and broader public engagement in raising awareness of the collection and conservation practices.

6. Liaise and co-ordinate external specialist conservation where required.

7. Work across Hull Museums' maritime sites as and where required, with keyholding responsibilities Hull Maritime Museum, the maritime collections store and 2 x historic vessels, being prepared to open up the site or lock up and set alarms, as necessary.

8. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated legislation places responsibilities for health and safety on Hull Culture and Leisure, as your employer and you as an employee of the company. In addition to the Company's overall duties, the post holder has personal responsibility for their own health & safety and that of other employees; additional and more specific responsibilities are identified in the Company's Corporate H&S policy.

Job Requirements

  • A graduate qualification in object conservation (or equivalent).
  • Experience in museum or heritage conservation, with strong practical skills.
  • Ability to manage volunteers, supervise staff and work to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Job Responsibilities

1. Responsibility for Staff: No direct line management responsibility Supervision of museum technicians, Collections & Documentation Assistant and volunteers

2. Responsibility for Customers/Clients: Working with the Volunteer Co-ordinator to increase volunteer engagement. Liaison with external companies and specialists Supervision of freelance technicians

3. Responsibility for Budgets: Responsibility for up to £80,000 delegated conservation budget during delivery and post delivery phase

4. Responsibility for Physical Resources: Responsibility for the physical resources of the heritage service, particularly in regard to the museum/gallery collections, and to the buildings which house them. There is a 3 responsibility for a high standard of care required for handling and conserving objects/artworks to recognised standards. The conservation staff have shared responsibility for all materials and equipment used.
