Harlow Council and Harlow Creates are looking for an artist to deliver a competition and work with Harlow schools, education establishments, or organisations working with children and young people to design and create a carved wooden structure that will be placed within the new community orchard located at the former Canons Gate allotment. You will run a competition open to all children and young people in Harlow but also deliver targeted workshops to support students with designs that they can enter the competition. You will deliver a Continuing Professional Development session with staff in each setting that you deliver in. The purpose is to upskill staff and provide them with the knowledge that will help them to continue to use your methods and practices to assist instruction, learning activities, and assessments aimed at meeting educational goals. You have artistic license to design workshops and reinterpret winning designs to ensure that they work on the completed carved wooden structure, but they must still be recognisable as the winning entries. If you need inspiration then this can be taken from the orchard, nature, or the sculpture collection such as Henry Moore's Bronze Cross/Upright Motif No. 2 located outside the Civic Centre of which Henry Moore stated "I started by balancing different forms one above the other - with results rather like North American totem poles - but as I continued the attempt gained more unity, also perhaps became more organic." We are looking to offer a total of 6 workshop days and want to receive proposals from artists with appropriate experience and skills to deliver workshops and create the artwork either working alone or in partnership with a community organisation. We are looking for artists based in Harlow or beyond who are willing to be part of the Harlow Creates network. You will be working with classes/groups of up to 30 children or young people aged 5 (Yr1) and above. A class teacher will always be present in the classroom. You will be matched with a school or community setting by Harlow Creates unless you indicate a definite connection that you know will work for what you want to deliver. The fee offered is £250 per workshop day. There is also a budget of up to £100 for specialist materials per workshop. The maximum budget for the workshops is £2,700 The total budget to attend a judging day is £250. The total maximum budget for the wooden structure is £12000 to include materials, labour, and installation at the Community Orchard. The total maximum budget for the project is £14,950. Our notional day rate is £250 for up to 7.5 hrs of work. Exact hours can be arranged at the discretion of the successful applicant. You will deliver a town-wide competition and work with Harlow schools, or organisations working with children and young people to design and create a carved wooden structure that will be placed within the new community orchard. To support the competition, you will deliver 12 Workshops (6 days) including CPD sessions to be delivered before 27 June. One day of delivery should include two workshops lasting 1-2 hours each. A day could be split over two days. It is expected that one day will also incorporate a CPD session of 1-2 hours in each delivery setting. Harlow Creates will assist by pairing artists with educational or children and young people organisations, but exact timings will be arranged directly between the artist and the school/organisation to suit you both. You will take part in a competition entry judging day alongside other stakeholders. It is expected that the final structure will be constructed from wood and will be installed in the Community Orchard.
