We're looking for a Critical Friend with a specialism in Community Development to support us to develop a broader understanding of successful approaches to community development, support the Community Engagement Manager in developing projects, and contribute to the evaluation of the programme.

Job Description

Down to Earth is the Creative People and Places Programme working across the Borough of Wigan, the programme is asset based, data driven and community led. We aim to connect more people with the borough's abundance of high quality green space through creative activities & engage local communities as audiences, advocates & leaders to create new work, together, that couldn't be made anywhere else.

Down to Earth has been working in Wigan since 2022, the programme has developed strong community partnerships and a stable consortium and delivery team and is now in position to deliver an exciting and ambitious programme of activity through the next financial year. As a Creative People & Places Programme, Down to Earth is an Action Learning project with a responsibility to reflect on and report on activity and approaches that are successfully engaging new audiences with creativity.

We're looking for four critical friends to provide expert advice and scrutiny in key areas of development for the programme, contributing both to programme planning and evaluation. The four areas of focus are Accessibility, Global Impact, Artistic Ambition & Community Development.

The contract will be made to a freelance individual or an organisation. The successful candidate will be responsible for their own tax affairs.

The contract will start on April 1st 2025 and end on March 31st 2026. There is the potential for a contract extension dependant on funding.

The Fee will be £4,000 per year inclusive of VAT, a separate budget is available to meet access costs and travel expenses.

Job Requirements

  • Support the programme to develop a broader understanding of successful approaches to community development. With an emphasis on asset based approaches, community leadership and creating sustainable transformation.

  • Give advice and support to the Community Engagement Manager in developing projects that put traditionally overlooked communities in the lead.

  • Contribute to the evaluation of the programme focusing on the impact of activity on communities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Spend 3 days in person with the delivery team, consortium and core panel to contribute to programme wide planning.

  • Commit to 8 half days with DtE Staff advising on specific area of expertise.

  • Create a short reflective report based on your experiences of the DtE programme for inclusion in the annual evaluation, this can be submitted in any format agreed with the project director.
