We are seeking a talented, organised and calm curator with knowledge and experience of artist development and working with people with mental health issues. Someone who finds joy in building collaborative relationships and partnerships to deliver creative programming.
THE ROLE
Working closely with the gallery director and the wider team, the Curator is key to developing and delivering the gallery's programme and supporting artist development.
PROGRAMME
- Develop, co-curate and project manage the majority of exhibitions in our gallery space as well as satellite exhibition spaces ORTUS and Long Gallery (at Denmark Hill).
- Support artists to lead on events connected to exhibitions such as workshops and talks.
- Take lead responsibility for specific exhibition and artist projects, including residencies and workshops.
- Work with artists, staff, and freelancers such as technicians, to ensure that each project or programme element is delivered to schedule and on budget. For example work with our operations manager to book technicians and transport, and our digital manager on all comms information.
- Write and collaborate on texts, images and film to promote the programme on social media, via printed material, in press releases, and on our website.
ARTIST DEVELOPMENT
- Support artists involved in the public programme to develop their art practice, using studio time, exhibitions, workshops, events, surgery sessions, partnership projects and residencies.
- Support the Gallery Coordinator to coordinate studio sessions including regular drop in sessions and artists' individual studio time, as well as manage our annual art fair.
- Facilitate the Gallery's weekly Bethlem Artist Collective sessions and develop peer-to-peer support opportunities.
STRATEGIC
- Work closely with the director, the wider team and stakeholders to develop the public programme.
- Contribute to evaluation, press packs, fundraising applications and other strategic documents.
- Advocate for the Gallery and the artists we work with.
- Nurture relationships with partners, colleagues and collaborators.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Experience
- At least 5 years' experience working as a curator and/or supporting artists
- Experience of curating exhibitions and/or a wider public programme
- Experience of developing partnerships and managing multiple stakeholder relationships
- Experience of working in a mental health setting or similar and with people with a wide range of access needs
- Experience of line management (desirable)
- Experience/training as a practising artist
Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent IT skills
- Ability to advocate well for artists and artistic practice
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
Knowledge
- An understanding of arts practice and the visual arts sector
- Knowledge of arts and health sectors' issues and priorities
