We are looking for a director for a professional concert/workshop production of a new co-created musical about disability. This unstaged concert will have two performances on Saturday 13th September 2025 in the Neville Studio, Nottingham Playhouse, and rehearsals will commence on 8th September. The director will receive a £2554 buyout including holiday pay for the week of rehearsals, preparation and working on key dates (such as auditions). This is to cover a maximum of 128 hours. The director must have experience directing professional actors in a musical production, this may be in theatre or radio. We are happy to consider directors who have worked in fringe, mid-scale or commercial musical theatre. Unfortunately, we are not considering applicants who do not have any professional credits. We are particularly looking for a director who is based in the Midlands and who has personal experience of disability. Auditions, rehearsals and in-person meetings will take place either at Nottingham Playhouse or Lakeside Arts. This show is co-created with members of the disabled community in Nottingham. As part of the co-created nature of the show, we expect the director to engage with the participant co-creators, consider their ideas carefully and expect some representation from the co-creators at all stages of the process. Additionally, there are very specific requirements for characters including ethnicity and disabled identity which must be sensitively considered. The director will be responsible for casting the show, preparing rehearsals, running rehearsals and creating the artistic vision for the show. We expect the director to be present during show day and there may be additional tasks related to the promotion of the show. N.B The expectation is for the show to be performed in the rough with no set and a single lighting state. This production is part of a research project investigating co-created musical theatre in disabled communities. We are intending to interview/survey creatives on the process of creating the show. Key Dates Closing Date for Applications: 7th Feb We intend to interview in the week beginning 24th Feb and have the director in post by the 28th February, however, they will only be needed for ad hoc days and meetings until later in the year. The director must be able to commit to rehearsals week beginning 8th September and the show day 13th September. Please email a CV and a short cover letter telling us what attracts you to the project. This can either be written, audio, or video. You may include links to video examples of your previous work. Please use the subject "Director Application - [Your Name]" Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview in front of the producer, writer and a community co-creator. They will receive some material for the show and will be asked about their creative vision for the work.Job Summary
