Description

Job Summary

Call out for East Sussex based disabled and/or neurodivergent artists interested in movement, performance, circus & play to join us for a paid in-person half-day R&D session on Weds 18th Feb or Thurs 19th Feb in Lewes. Exploring imagination, play and the natural world. Supported by Without Walls

Job Description

Folly! (Permission to Play) is a new multi-artform concept by neurodivergent Brighton based artist & designer Sam Williams, in collaboration with Blue Moon Circus. Currently in the early stages of development, the R&D is supported by Blueprint: Without Walls Research and Development programme.

Ambitious in scale and complexity, FOLLY proposes to be a stand alone interactive installation that audiences can experience through self-directed play, and a stage for a novel new approach to aerial performance that invites the audience to participate in the creation of a new shared ritual, generated through site-specific storytelling & improvised game play.

Sam is seeking to collaborate with up to four disabled and/or neurodivergent artists to take part in a half-day paid research and development session at a meanwhile industrial unit space at The Phoenix, Lewes, taking place on Wednesday 18th OR Thursday 19th February (exact timings to be confirmed).

The R&D session will involve playful exploration of a built structure, movement, discussion, testing ideas and reflecting on how different bodies and minds interact with the work. There is no expectation of finished performance.

This is a paid opportunity with a total fee of £150 offered for a half day session.

Who this is for

This opportunity is open to disabled and/or neurodivergent artists based in the Lewes / Brighton area with an interest in movement, performance, circus, play or physical exploration. You do not need to identify as a circus artist or aerialist but must be comfortable with movement explorations and working with a built structure.

Applicants should have previous experience working in creative development or R&D contexts, and feel comfortable contributing ideas, reflections and feedback within an exploratory process

The opportunity is only open to those based within a 20 mile radius from Lewes, East Sussex. Applicants from further afield are welcome to apply, however we can only cover local travel costs.

Job Requirements

This opportunity is open to disabled and/or neurodivergent artists interested in movement, performance, circus, play & physical exploration.

The session will involve interacting with & responding to a built structure through movement, play, conversation & reflection. Movement can be adapted in ways that work for you, & there is no expectation of specific physical techniques or performance skills.

You should feel comfortable participating in a shared space with other creatives for a half-day session.

Artists should either be able to work independently within the space or communicate clearly what support or adjustments would enable participation.

We welcome a wide range of access needs & are committed to making reasonable adjustments.

This opportunity is open but not limited to aspiring or experienced aerialists, movement practitioners, dancers, or artists working through embodied or physical practice, we welcome your application

Job Responsibilities

  • Take part in guided play using interactive theatre prompts
  • Engage with visuals of the design development, inputting into discussions and contributing feedback
  • Explore and test a prototype structure to understand physical interaction and use
  • Experience the structure as a set for testing performance prompts, rather than a free-play environment
  • Participate in a facilitated and supported exploration of the space, with clear guidance around safety. You will be required to sign a waiver regarding your own safety.
  • Observe short aerial performances and improvisation by Blue Moon Circus as part of the R&D
  • Share reflections and responses to inform the ongoing development of the project
  • Wear comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for movement, and bring curiosity and imagination
