Description
We are looking to support 2 young people in the early stages of their career, who are passionate about creativity and history, to undertake a paid training placement with us.
You will work within the team at Wells Cathedral, receiving mentoring and inputting into the design of the creative activity as part of the Vicars' Close Project, our new historical visitor attraction.
The Early Career Creatives will:
- Develop awareness of how to design creative events.
- Understand how history can inspire creativity.
- Advocate for the experience of young people.
- Gain knowledge of working at board level.
- Build leadership, planning and curation skills.
Vicars' Close is an amazing medieval street that feels like travelling back in time. For over 650 years it has been home to the Cathedral's choir. As well as repairing the buildings, we are engaging people in a whole range of activities - from singing and oral histories to wildlife gardening. Eventually, once we've finished repairs and made it more accessible, we will open parts of the street as an innovative new visitor attraction with all kinds of things to explore.
Fee: £3000 (total fee, including travel expenses)
Time Commitment: 40 half days (Half Day = 3 hours, equating to £75 per half day or £25 per hour), over an 18 month period.
The Vicars' Close project is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to create these exciting new, paid opportunities for young people in Somerset.
- You must be aged between 18-25 years.
- You should have an interest developing a creative career and history.
- You must be based within travelling distance of Wells Cathedral and be able to make your own way to Wells.
- You will need good availability and ability to attend during the 18-month period (exact schedule will be designed and determined with the appointed candidates)
- If you have any access requirements, we will make any reasonable adjustments to best support you.
- Even though we are based at a Cathedral, you do not need to identify as religious to apply. We welcome applications from all, including those who feel the Cathedral may not be a place for them because of barriers they may face as part of their lived experience.
- You do not need previous experience of working in a history (heritage) or creative organisation.
Over an 18-month period you will work with us, contributing ideas, shaping the design of activity,
learning about creative programming and strategic planning.
You will:
- Collaborate with the team at Wells Cathedral, bringing fresh perspectives and insight.
- Understand how to devise and deliver a creative programme based on history, including design, planning, scheduling, logistics, fundraising, marketing, and event management.
- Build leadership skills.
- Shadow members of the team as different aspects of the project are delivered and receive mentorship.
- Co-design new creative activity.
- Attend team meetings, with the opportunity to input and ask questions.
- Participate in Project Board meetings to gain experience of working with boards.
- Ensure young people are represented in exhibitions and events and that new projects are more inclusive, engaging, authentic and real for young people.
