Events Host (Freelance Work in the City of London)

Salary: £13.85 per hour (London Living Wage), minimum 3-hour shifts.
Hours: 2 shifts per week on average- if weekday evening, generally 6pm-9pm or if weekend the average shift is 12pm to 11pm. This can vary as it depends on the organiser who books the church.

About the Role:

We are looking for dependable and friendly freelancers to join our team of Events Hosts at St Mary-at-Hill Church. You will be responsible for opening and closing the church for events, assisting with setting up and clearing up before and after events, and oversee the smooth running of events, whilst liaising with the event organisers. The events range from concerts, workshops, and recitals to corporate and community gatherings, fashion shows, exhibitions, and receptions.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Hosting events: You will be responsible for opening and closing the church, and managing the flow of the event.
  • Event setup and takedown: Ensure the space is prepared, assist with equipment, and clear up after events to keep the church ready for the next use.
  • Customer service: Answer guest questions, provide directions, and maintain a welcoming environment by knowing the layout and storage areas of the church.
  • Logistics support: Operate basic technical equipment, such as sound systems and lighting, and manage seating and other setups as required.
  • On-site problem-solving: Address any challenges during events and handle emergencies calmly and efficiently.

Working Hours:

Events are typically scheduled from 18:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and 16:00 to 22:00 on weekends, based on client bookings. The role requires a minimum of two events per month, with the opportunity for additional hours depending on demand and availability.

Job Requirements

  • Dependable, friendly, and confident with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience in customer service or events is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, managing event setup and takedown and ensuring the space is organized.
  • Familiarity with basic sound and lighting equipment, and knowledge of how to use sound systems or a willingness to learn.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the capacity to handle unexpected issues calmly.
  • Reliable, punctual, and flexible to work evening and weekend shifts.
  • Interest in historic venues and preserving their atmosphere is a plus.
  • Must be available for a minimum of two events per month.

Job Responsibilities

  • Event Hosting: Open and close the church for events, welcome guests, and serve as the main point of contact, creating a friendly, inviting atmosphere.
  • Setup and Takedown: Prepare the space, assist with seating and equipment setup, and ensure everything is tidied up after events.
  • Customer Service: Provide information and assistance, answer questions, and ensure everyone feels welcome.
  • Technical Support: Operate basic sound and lighting equipment and manage sound systems as required; training provided if needed.
  • Problem-Solving: Handle any on-site issues.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Be aware of emergency protocols and act accordingly in case of an emergency to ensure the safety of all attendees.
  • Basic Maintenance: Perform tasks such as cleaning up, changing light bulbs, and ensuring the venue is well-maintained.
