Job Summary

The Gate is seeking a confident, collaborative and compassionate Executive Director to partner with our artistic team in steering the company.

Job Description

The Gate is seeking a confident, collaborative and compassionate Executive Director to partner with our artistic team in steering the company. As we navigate a transformative era for the arts, we need a strategic leader who balances commercial acumen with a deep-seated passion for artist-led storytelling. Our leading priority is to secure multi-year funding (such as a return to the NPO) to build a more sustainable Gate and better support our artists and serve our audiences. The Executive Director is responsible for the organisational and financial health of the Gate, securing funding for programme and working closely with the Artistic team to ensure the art is kept at the heart of our strategy. If you are a bold thinker with a deep understanding of income generation and experience in securing funding for the arts, we would welcome you to apply.

Job Requirements

Essential We are seeking a strategic leader with senior management experience in the arts, particularly in financial oversight, business planning, and complex contract negotiation. You must have a proven track record in fundraising - specifically securing gifts over £50,000 - and the ability to translate artistic vision into viable, budget-conscious programming. A deep understanding of the London theatre ecology is vital, as is the ability to manage key partner relationships and report to major funders like Arts Council England. As a collaborative team player and confident decision-maker, you will champion our mission of inclusivity while providing expert leadership in HR and operational management. Desirable While not required, we welcome candidates with experience in organisational leadership, capital project management, and premises leasing. Other desirable qualities would be a strong grasp of audience development, diverse theatre practices and governance.

Job Responsibilities

The Executive Director serves as the strategic engine of the Gate. Partnering closely with the artistic team, you will provide the operational vision and financial leadership necessary to sustain our mission. We are looking for a bold, commercially-minded leader to oversee our business planning, fundraising, and organisational resilience, ensuring the Gate remains a vital, inclusive, and world-class home for international storytelling. The role will include: - Leadership, strategy and planning - Funding and income generation - Financial management - Governance - Productions - Operations & HR
