Our theatre - The Mowlem - is situated in the heart of the community in Dorset, at the end of Swanage Bay with views over the beach and out to Peveril Point. Ours is a unique cultural centre with huge potential to be realised.

Over the past four years the Mowlem has been transformed and significantly opened up to the public and community of Swanage. The variety of programming and the welcoming ambience of the Venue have enriched the audience experience.

Currently managed by a combination of Trustees and employed staff, the Board have decided to create this new role of Executive Director to take the Mowlem on the next exciting stage of its journey.

Job title: Executive Director
Reports to: Board of Trustees
Line managed by: Chair of Board
Responsible for: Operations Manager
Location: Based at the Mowlem, Swanage with some travel required.
Some flexibility for hybrid working
Salary: £45,000
Work Pattern: Full time (40 hours a week), usually daytimes with evenings & weekends as required

Job Requirements

Main Purpose of the Job
To provide artistic vision and business development to the Mowlem Theatre. To engage
with the public and community and advocate for the organisation. To develop plans for
the long-term sustainability of the venue. This is the senior leadership role within the
organisation.

Job Responsibilities

Working with Board/Governance

  • Prepare narrative and financial reports for monthly Board meetings
  • Attend - or delegate attendance for - all Board sub-committee meetings
  • Establish and monitor key indicators of the organisation's performance and impact in
  • the community
  • Lead on an Annual Report for public and key stakeholders
  • Consider and recommend to the Board organisational change and innovation

Finance and administration

  • Create with the team an annual budget for approval by the Board
  • Monitor the financial performance of the organisation against the annual budget
  • Create and oversee a scheme of delegation for financial decision-making in the
  • organisation
  • Oversee regular and accurate financial reports to the sub-committee and Board,
  • highlighting variance against budget
  • Refresh and maintain organisational risk register, including external organisational
  • risks
  • Ensure the organisation fulfils its regulatory obligations such as safeguarding, health nd safety, and GDPR
