Description
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Financial Controller manages the day-to-day financial control operations of the Gallery. This includes all aspects of financial accounting, cash flow, debtor and creditor management.
Key Accountabilities:
- Supervising the maintenance of financial ledgers and accounting processes for the National Portrait Gallery and NPG Company Limited (trading subsidiary).
- Oversight of the year-end process including statutory accounts and external audit, including completion of the statutory accounts.
- Ensuring that appropriate systems and internal controls are implemented and maintained.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant Charity legislation.
- Liaising with bank and ensuring bank signatories are up to date.
- Providing financial and non-financial information to Trustees, directors, budget holders, project managers and external funders.
- Setting work plans, delegating tasks, reviewing performance, providing guidance, line management, coaching and mentoring for five direct reports.
- Responsible for maintaining financial records for the department and compliance with data protection and GDPR.
- Responsible for co-ordinating counter-fraud measures across the Gallery
- Providing cover for the Chief Financial Officer where appropriate.
- Ensuring good communication between financial control and business partnering functions to facilitate good shared understanding of significant financial transactions.
- Promoting sustainable working practices and reducing the environmental impact of the Gallery's operations in line with its Sustainability Statement.
- Overseeing the financial systems, ensuring they are effective for the requirements of the finance department and the wider organisation.
- Identifying, planning and implementing improvements to systems.
Key Experience, Skills and Criteria:
- Fully qualified CCAB accountant.
- Demonstrable experience in an accountancy and/or finance environment.
- Previous experience of managing a team of similar size and operating in a complex environment.
- Will have experience gained from either: audit; an accounting firm; or a charity, public sector or similar organisation and hold a professional accounting qualification.
- Strong technical accounting, able to support the Senior Financial Accountant in determining accounting treatments. Working knowledge of Financial Reporting Manual (preferable)
- Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills are required to line manage, convey complex information, influence and negotiate.
- Excellent computer literacy skills, including a high degree of proficiency with spreadsheets and experience of interrogating a computerised accounts systems.
- Proven communication skills in dealing with senior staff and ability to relate to non-financial managers.
