Job Summary

Are you a visual/mural artist that has connections with Stanley or County Durham? The Forge and Karbon Homes are looking for TWO professional community-based artists to create new artworks on Stanley’s Front Street (County Durham). The artwork needs to be completed between June to August 2025.

Job Description

You will meet with Stanley residents and community group members to gather ideas, and then draft artwork for three shutters. Once the stakeholders have agreed the designs, you will install the artwork on three shop shutters on Stanley Front Street. (Indicative size of shutters: 4.4m x 2.7m; 3.8m x 2.6m; 4.8m x 2.6m); the size of the other three shutters tbc..

Terms and Conditions


Nature of engagement: Freelance (self-employed) contract


Place of Work: Stanley Front Street

Fee: £3,000 fee for each artist to include liaison with community groups, production of draft designs, and painting of three separate artworks on shutters. There is an additional resources budget of £250.

Contract length: Delivery to take place between June 2025 and August 2025. Note the timeline may be extended until October 2025.

Job Requirements

  • Excellent creative skills in visual or large mural art
  • Experience of working within community settings
  • Experience of working with a range of corporate and community partners
  • Proven excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills with people at all levels
  • Understanding of the issues facing historically-under-invested towns and communities
  • Ability to adjust to changing project needs or community feedback
  • An interest in social impact and community development, with an understanding of how the arts can support social cohesion and wellbeing
  • Strong reflective practice, including openness to feedback and ongoing development
  • Knowledge of sustainable working practices
  • Experience of delivering public art programmes
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Willingness to take a hands-on approach to problem solving and trouble shooting
  • Must have own Public Liability Insurance and Enhanced DBS.

Job Responsibilities

  • Engage with local community groups to hear and respond to their ideas (The Forge will organise and facilitate these three meetings with groups identified by Karbon Homes)
  • Contribute to all risk assessments
  • Liaise with The Forge's Creative Producer and Karbon staff member keeping them informed of progress
  • Paint designs on shutters to an agreed timetable.
