Job Summary

Empire Consett and Bishop Auckland Town Hall are looking for experienced and passionate facilitators to lead Youth Theatre weekly sessions on Saturdays from September to December 2025.

Job Description

Empire Consett and Bishop Auckland Town Hall Youth Theatres provide young people aged 4-11 with a wide range of opportunities to improve confidence, develop performance and creative skills, and make new friends.

There are weekly sessions, performance opportunities, visits from theatre specialists, trips to see shows and more.

Both Youth Theatres are at an exciting stage of development and we're looking to build a team of inspirational facilitators to take us into the coming Youth Theatre term and beyond. Whilst there will be more freelance opportunities from January 2026, this role relates specifically to our autumn term. To apply, you must be available on:

Saturdays 27 September, 4, 11, 18 & 25 October, 8, 15, 22, 29 November & 6 December

10am-11am 4-7 years and/or 11.15am-12.45pm 8-11 years

Fee £120 per session to include all planning

Job Requirements

  • At least 2 years' experience working with children and young people in a youth theatre setting.
  • Experience of working with children and young people from a broad range of ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to devise and lead drama workshops that are creative, engaging and empowering.
  • Ability to manage group dynamics and create a nurturing learning environment.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of theatrical forms, genres and devising techniques.
  • Knowledge of good youth theatre practice.
  • Strong organisational skills, timekeeping and communication.

All applicants must hold a Public Liability Insurance (£10m) and these roles will be subject to DBS clearance.

Job Responsibilities

  • To plan and lead fun and exciting weekly youth theatre sessions that build drama skills, confidence and creativity.
  • To build a nurturing and supportive environment within sessions, ensuring all young people feel safe and valued and have their voices truly heard.
  • To ensure activities are accessible for participants of different ages, backgrounds and experience of theatre.
  • To liaise with the Venue & Programme Manager to provide regular updates on the group's progress and to arrange theatre practitioner/show visits as appropriate during the term.
  • To work with a chaperone to ensure all administrative tasks are completed and monitoring information are collected.
  • To adhere to Durham County Council's Safeguarding Policy

Successful applicants will be invited to a short online interview week beginning 21 July 2025 and a skills sharing workshop at Empire Consett from 11am-1pm on Friday 1 August. This workshop will give us opportunity to experience your style of facilitation and will also enable you to pick up some new exercises/games from other applicants.
