The Gallery Manager leads the gallery technician team in the development. installation, maintenance, and de-rig of permanent and temporary exhibition spaces.

Exhibition project team support
- Be the main point of contact, and management of on-site technician support for the installation of objects for all exhibitions and displays across the museum, including packing, handling, temporary movements and reinstallations.
- Attend relevant exhibition and display project meetings relating to object installation throughout the 3D design and build phases to provide feedback on the design and advise on object hanging methods and ensure ongoing maintenance of the exhibition is considered throughout its development.
Galleries and displays support
- Work with the exhibitions team to agree processes with regards to cleaning, repairs, and maintenance of all permanent and temporary exhibition spaces and undertake condition checking of loans in.
- Manage and allocate resources for all helpdesk gallery maintenance tasks to ensure they are carried out in a timely manner, updating, and closing tasks promptly.
Health and safety
- Advise on all aspects of best practice relating to object handling and installation, health and safety processes, Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations, and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations, identifying any training requirements or specialist consultancy.
- Review contractor and freelance staff risk assessments and method statements prior to them undertaking work onsite.
Managing workshop and surrounding areas
- Manage the Exhibitions Store and other storage spaces (which host crates and relevant exhibition equipment).
- Develop and maintain internal reuse materials protocols for exhibition equipment, (including plinths, frames, mannequins and other setworks).
People management
- Manage the team's schedule to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the gallery spaces, liaising with departments to meet their requirements as necessary.
Person specification
Knowledge, skills, and experience
- Demonstrable practical and technical skills, including carpentry, mounting, and framing, decorating skills and a robust understanding of a wide variety of tools.
- Experience of fine art handling and object care.
- Experience of running a workshop and taking care of specialist equipment.
- Experience of managing and mentoring technicians/teams of technicians delivering projects to time and quality standards.
- Experience in Health and Safety management of workshop and exhibition construction/deconstruction.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with internal staff and external stakeholders (including lenders, couriers, and artists/designers).
Terms and conditions
Salary: up to £35,000 per annum, dependent on experience
Holidays: 25 days per annum + Christmas Eve (museum closed)
Hours: full-time, 35 hours/5 days per week (Monday - Friday)
Location: on-site at the museum
Special demands of the role: there may be a requirement on occasion to work outside of the United Kingdom.
