Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and friendly individual to join our team in the role of retail assistant/front of house. This is a key position within the gallery as you will be the point of contact for customers, both in person, and via telephone and email. The role will involve significant administrative tasks as well as the day-to-day upkeep of the gallery, and will require a self-motivated and intuitive person who is passionate about providing great customer service and representing the artists and works we exhibit to a very high standard.

We are a small team, so although this role is customer focused, there will be plenty of opportunity for the right candidate to gain experience in all aspects of work in a gallery/small business.

The position is to cover Fridays, 10am - 5.30pm, but ideally we are looking for someone with availability/flexibility for ad-hoc days and cover.

Job Requirements

Required Skills

- Strong written and verbal communication skills

- Some experience of researching and producing copy for external use (exhibition texts, artists profiles, blogs etc)

- Ideally 2 years' experience in a customer/public facing, sales related role

- Strong organisational and administrative skills

- Experience with Shopify (or similar)

- Experience working with couriers (UPS, DHL, etc) as well as good knowledge customs (UK and international)

- An interest in and knowledge of the arts (knowledge of ceramics, glass, metal and woodwork a plus)

- Good understanding of Microsoft and Adobe Suite

Desirable Skills

- Knowledge and understanding of social media platforms

- Experience handling and packing fragile artworks

- Experience of organising and working at art fairs, public exhibitions or similar events

Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

- Provide a warm welcome and support to visitors

- Process sales both in person and over the phone, as well as fulfil online orders (pack, prepare labels and dispatch)

- Respond to email, phone and in person queries

- Prepare pre and post-sale documents (catalogue of works, invoices, VAT receipts, etc)

- Liaise with couriers and customs for incoming and outgoing shipments

- Research/copy writing and editing

- Manage supply of stationery and packing materials

- Maintain contact databases (incl. clients, interior designers, collectors, press, and industry contacts)

- Arrange and keep record of commissions/loans

- Ensure the gallery and stock room is kept clean and tidy

The role will include other ad-hoc tasks such as

- Assist on shoots and exhibitions; wrap and move works to location, install/dismantle

- Assist at Private Views and events

- Troubleshoot issues, including technical problems with phones, computers, website and office equipment
