We are seeking a dynamic and proactive freelance General Manager to lead the organisation’s day-to-day management, starting as soon as possible.

Job Description

Instruments of Time and Truth (IT&T) is Oxford's premier period-instrument orchestra. Founded in 2014, the ensemble's pro le has grown rapidly, and it now presents around 30 performances each year in Oxford, across the UK, and internationally.

Alongside its concert activity, IT&T runs an extensive education programme for school-age pupils, students, and adult learners, including workshops, masterclasses, one-to-one coaching, and digital content.

Since 2019, the organisation has transitioned from a volunteer-led model to a professionally run operation. The management team currently includes a freelance Marketing, Education & Outreach Manager.

Role Overview

Instruments of Time and Truth is seeking a General Manager with a strong track record in managing artistic events to oversee the orchestra's artistic programme and lead its fundraising activities.

The General Manager will be responsible for the direct management of the organisation's self-promoted events, the preparation and oversight of annual and event-speci c budgets, and the planning and delivery of fundraising activity across the organisation.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced arts manager to join a young and fast-growing organisation. The role is offered on a freelance, remote basis, requiring approximately 2.5 days per week (which can be worked flexibly. Generally our working days are 9.30-5.30. The General Manager will also be expected to attend IT&T performances and events on a regular basis.

The post holder will report regularly to the Board of Trustees and relevant sub-committees, and will work collaboratively with the organisation's other freelance managers.


Job Requirements

  • Experience managing small-to-medium-sized organisations or projects
  • Experience working in a classical music or performing arts setting
  • Proven ability to develop and sustain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including donors, trustees, partners, and performers
  • Experience preparing, managing, and monitoring budgets
  • Ability to present both written and numerical information clearly and effectively
  • Strong ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively as part of a team
  • Excellent project management skills, including planning, organisation, and delivery
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Strong IT skills, including familiarity with standard office software and online tools
