Job Summary

The General Manager will provide strategic, operational and financial leadership across all aspects of Viva Arts and Community Group. The General Manager will be responsible for running our theatre, growing income and act as Producer for Viva Productions, including professional touring productions.

Job Description

The GM will lead the day-to-day operations of Viva, supporting the strategic vision established by the Board and ensuring the organisation remains sustainable, effective and responsive to need. The role is responsible for developing and implementing operational plans, maintaining strong communication between staff, volunteers and Trustees, and representing Viva externally.
The GM will oversee the operation & development of The Viva Theatre, maximising both commercial and community use of the venue, supporting productions, hires and events, and ensuring a safe, professional and welcoming environment. They will also act as Producer for Viva Productions, including professional touring productions, supporting the continued growth of the organisation's artistic programme.
Responsibility extends to the management and development of the Viva Charity Shop, ensuring effective retail operations, income generation and alignment with wider organisational objectives.
The GM will line manage staff, support recruitment, training and performance management, and oversee volunteer coordination and development. They will be responsible for organisational budgets, financial monitoring and reporting, working closely with bookkeepers, accountants and Trustees to ensure financial compliance and sustainability. The role will also identify and develop new income streams, support fundraising activities and oversee funding applications and reporting requirements.
Acting as Company Secretary, the postholder will ensure compliance with Charity Commission and Companies House requirements, support the preparation of annual reports and accounts, maintain organisational policies and procedures, and oversee safeguarding, health and safety, data protection and insurance arrangements.
The GM will contribute to long-term strategic planning, develop partnerships and collaborative opportunities, identify areas for growth and community engagement, and lead the development of new projects & initiatives.

Job Requirements

We are seeking a highly organised and motivated individual with experience in organisational or operational management, team leadership, financial management and budget monitoring. Applicants should have knowledge of fundraising and funding applications, along with experience or understanding of theatre, productions and/or producing. An understanding of charity governance and compliance is essential.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent organisational, administrative, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritise competing demands and work independently using initiative. Strong problem-solving, decision-making and relationship-building skills are required, enabling effective collaboration with staff, volunteers, Trustees and external partners.
