About the role:

The Head of Design and Interpretation is responsible for defining and delivering the creative vision for the British Museum through exhibitions and displays as well as marketing campaigns, learning materials, and digital outputs, in support of the Museum's strategies. A strong advocate for audiences, excellence and best practice, the role will champion the highest quality, integrated design and interpretation as well as lead and strategically build a creative team of specialists who will push the boundaries to create an innovative holistic museum offer.

Job Requirements

About you:

  • Degree or equivalent in a design related field
  • Significant experience across a range of disciplines including 3D, 2D, lighting, digital design and interpretation.
  • Significant experience in overseeing graphic and 3D design in a museum, gallery or visitor attraction, at different scales, involving multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience working with a brand, marketing and graphics, experience of delivering exhibitions, of the RIBA design stages, and of briefing, commissioning and procurement of design projects.
  • Demonstrated experience of leading, developing and motivating creative teams.
  • Proven track record of building relationships across teams and departments, and with external partners.

Job Responsibilities

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Lead the Design and Interpretation function, providing creative direction for all outputs across multiple media. Lead on delivery of a clear vision to present a compelling and exciting proposition for audiences. Use expert leadership skills and technical knowledge to input into briefs, working with colleagues across the organisation to establish a unified shared vision.
  • Establish and maintain the highest level of design and interpretation standards leading on strategies for the future. Find new ways of interpreting our collections and our stories through fresh, sophisticated, high-quality outputs that broaden the richness of the visitor experience and appeal to larger and new audiences.
  • Deliver coherent and consistent design and interpretive approaches across different programmes of engagement and channels of communication. Ensure that the unified vision is integrated into the development of all elements of the Masterplan as it progresses.
