Description

Job Summary

We are seeking a Head of Voice to support actors engaged across all RSC stages, ensuring they are audible, clear, and vocally secure.

Job Description

Working closely with the Co Artistic Directors, Producers, Directors and wider creative teams, the post holder will provide expert voice and text support throughout the production process. This newly shaped role will also involve collaboration with Patsy Rodenburg (Emeritus Director of Voice), including contributions to programmes designed to nurture the continued professional development of actors and voice practitioners.

This is a full-time, permanent position based in Stratford upon Avon.

You will be working 40 hours per week; however, flexibility is essential to meet the demands of the theatrical schedule. This includes adapting hours to support rehearsals, technical rehearsals, production weeks, and performance periods. Evening and weekend work will be required, particularly during tech and show runs. The role will also involve occasional travel to, and working in, London as part of production or organisational needs.

Job Requirements

To be suitable for this role, it is essential that you have the following knowledge and experience:

  • A post graduate qualification in Voice Studies.
  • Expert knowledge of voice and text work, particularly in relation to classical and contemporary theatre, including Shakespeare.
  • Strong pedagogical and coaching skills, with the ability to develop vocal technique and performance clarity across diverse acting companies.
  • Planning and organisational skills, capable of balancing multiple productions, rehearsals, and performance commitments simultaneously.
  • Artist-centred and collaborative, with a passion for supporting others to realise their creative potential.

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Producer (Stratford) key areas of responsibility include (please see the role profile for the comprehensive list):

  • Ensure all actors across RSC stages are consistently audible, clear, and vocally supported.
  • Work closely with Co-Artistic Directors, Producers, Directors and creative teams to provide expert, appropriate voice and text support throughout productions.
  • Provide continuity of support across rehearsals, performances and tours, including warm-ups, individual and company workouts, and tailored coaching.
  • Work with Patsy Rodenburg in her new role as Emeritus Director of Voice on the delivery of periodic professional development projects for artists.
  • Lead and programme voice, text and ensemble sessions, and in consultation with directors offer feedback and practical voice and text-based notes to actors and companies (not based on acting notes, direction or interpretation).
