A bit about us.

Hello. We're Headlong, a theatre company based in Oxford, creating high-quality drama that tours the UK. We specialise in reimagining classics and commissioning future ones. Some of our past productions include untitled f*ck miss saigon play, People, Places and Things and Enron.

We're associate partners with Leeds Playhouse, Bolton Octagon as well as Oxford Playhouse and the Cultural Programme at the Schwarzman Centre. Throughout the scheme you will have the opportunity to get to know these guys too. During the application process, you'll primarily hear from Carla-Marie and meet more of our team at the interview stage.

So, what's Origins?

Headlong Origins is our 12-month artist development scheme running January-December 2025. It's for early-career theatre directors outside of London looking to develop their practice and move toward main-stage directing. Whether you've created studio work, run a small company, or want to transition from assistant directing, this part-time scheme offers support that fits around your schedule.

Scheme Breakdown:

  • £5,000 bursary
  • Two x 3 day in-person residentials with masterclasses (11-13 July & 18-20 Sept 2025)
  • Tickets to Headlong productions (plus travel & accommodation)
  • Allowance for theatre tickets and play-texts
  • Mentoring from Headlong
  • Two online mentoring sessions with a leading industry practitioner
  • Travel, accommodation, and day rate to observe Headlong production processes
  • Access to Headlong activities like team meetings and artistic planning sessions

Job Requirements

Who Can Apply?

  • You must live outside London.
  • You must have worked on at least two substantial shows for a public audience, which could include:
  • A professional or fringe show with a 2-week run
  • Major community work as a lead practitioner
  • Another theatre project with significant audience reach (e.g. digital theatre project)
  • Assistant or associate director experience on a professional production

Job Responsibilities

Thursday 16th January, 3pm
Online welcome and meet & greet with Headlong Team

Wednesday 19th February (day & overnight)
In person at Leeds Playhouse - The House Party Press Night

Friday 11th - Sunday 13th July (3 days)
In person residential at Bolton Octagon with Manchester International Festival visit

Thursday 18th - Saturday 20th September (3 days)
In person residential at Oxford Playhouse

November - date TBC (day & overnight)
In person in London

Friday 12th December (day & overnight)
In person in Oxford - wrap up day

The online mentoring sessions will be arranged between the candidate and the mentor.
