To cope with growing demand and our increasingly global perspective, the Royal College of Music is seeking to engage a professor of historical clarinet to join its international team of professors in the Historical Performance Faculty.

To cope with growing demand and our increasingly global perspective, the Royal College of Music is seeking to engage a professor of historical clarinet to join its international team of professors in the Historical Performance Faculty. We are looking for candidates with the following attributes:

  • You should be a widely recognised and highly respected practitioner, either as a performer or teacher.
  • You will be teaching, to an exceptionally high level of technical and musical proficiency, students at undergraduate, postgraduate and, in some cases, doctoral level, so relevant teaching experience at this level is required.
  • You should have a global perspective and significant international contacts.
  • You should understand the particular demands of the music profession whilst striving to help each student reach the fullness of their own potential.

Hourly rate: £59.84

This post is offered on a permanent, part-time basis and is available from March 2026. The anticipated working hours for this post will be between one and eight hours per week. The exact hours will be determined by the postholder, who will be expected to build their own student base.

Job Requirements

  • A relevant Higher Education qualification in music performance or equivalent
  • Experience of teaching gifted and talented students at undergraduate, postgraduate and sometimes doctoral level, preferably gained within a Conservatoire environment
  • An outstanding performing career
  • An established performer or artist with a substantial or developing track record, internationally recognised as a world-leading or potentially work-leading talent *
  • Experience participating in professional artistic programs of work internationally *
  • Experience of/or an interest in dealing with performance anxiety
  • Experience of conducting research and publishing findings in professional journals, books and electronic media
  • The ability to teach, coach, mentor and improve skills in the context of individual and where requested, group lessons

Job Responsibilities

  • Teaching principal study, second study and related study historical clarinet at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Sitting on examination and entrance audition panels as required
  • Sitting on orchestral audition panels as required
  • Chamber music coaching
  • Taking an active advisory role in keeping the historical clarinet syllabus relevant to current trends in the music profession
  • Taking orchestral repertoire classes and sectionals as required
  • To be aware of current pedagogical developments.
  • To comply with the RCM's Code of Teaching Practice and to contribute positively to the development and reputation of the RCM as a world- renowned centre of musical excellence
