Description

Job Description

The Diocese of London seeks to appoint an experienced professional freelance Interpretation Planner to devise an original, creative and inclusive and Interpretation Plan for Phase 2 of a National Lottery Heritage Fund Application for a c£4m project to restore a Grade II* listed closed church in central London.

The appointed consultant will be required to build on the outline proposal to develop a fully costed Interpretation Plan for the project, liaising with the project team, client (Diocese) and external project partners. We are seeking a consultant who can demonstrate an innovative and creative approach to interpretation and who has experience in delivering interpretation plans for National Lottery Heritage Fund projects as well as co-creation and creative commissioning.

To transform access to heritage for our target audiences, we are proposing a 'with not for' approach to the development of interpretation during the delivery phase. As such, we anticipate interpretation outputs being a series of creative commissions capturing the heritage stories of the site that are co-created with priority audiences as part of the 4-year activity plan during the delivery phase. Additional interpretation outputs may include digital and graphic elements and resources to share the heritage of the site with wide-ranging and diverse audiences.

This scope of work is for the development phase only. This is a part-time consultant role with variable hours offered on fixed-term contract with a contract fee budget of £12,000. Applicants are invited to complete the ITT form with their resourcing proposal (day rate and number of days).

The interpretation planner will be responsible for creating a fully costed interpretation plan along with any design and production briefs for the delivery phase of the project. This phase (development) of the contract runs from January 2025, with a draft plan to be completed by May 2025 ready for an anticipated August 2025 submission.

Job Requirements

Objectives of the Interpretation Plan:

The interpretation planner must ensure that the Interpretation Plan meets the following objectives:

  • To define the messages, stories and themes that are significant to the site's heritage and the intangible heritage of local communities, reinvigorating the Cloudesley Centre as a hub for the community
  • To involve a wider number of people (specifically the target audiences) in the Cloudesley Centre's heritage
  • To support the project's wider outcomes.

General responsibilities during the commission include:

  • Liaising with the Project Team
  • Attending Project Team and NLHF meetings
  • Producing monthly reports and submitting them to the Project Manager
  • Contributing to the Risk Register

Job Responsibilities

  • Draw on consultation findings and key publications (including Conservation Management Plan) and existing research to develop Interpretation Plan outlining priority audience needs, identifying key messages, themes, and methods for interpretation (such as a website, graphics package and co-created, creative commissions).
  • Work closely with Activity Planners to ensure the plan involves and responds to the needs of the target audiences and that content for the interpretation scheme can be co-created with audiences through the delivery of the activity plan, thus maximising inclusion and engagement with the heritage of the site through co-creative practices and heritage engagement activity.
  • Work with the Activity Planners to ensure that the interpretation plan dovetails with the activity plan for the round 2 submission.
  • Use the Interpretation Plan as a basis for the development of briefs for design and creative commissions that form part of the activity plan and delivery phase.
