Pay: £13-£14 per hour, depending on experience New Ashgate Gallery is an established independent art and craft gallery and charity in Farnham, England's World Craft Town. Since 1959, we have supported emerging and established artists through exhibitions, sales and professional opportunities. We present original paintings, prints, ceramics, jewellery, glass, textiles, sculpture and wood. We are seeking a confident, enthusiastic and commercially minded Junior Art Consultant to join our team for the busy festive season and continue in a permanent Saturday position. This is a demanding, sales-focused role, not simply a visitor welcome position. We need someone who genuinely enjoys selling, takes the initiative to engage customers and has the confidence to turn interest into purchases. You will be responsible for driving Saturday sales, working towards agreed targets and developing relationships with new and returning customers. You must be comfortable discussing and selling higher-value original art and contemporary craft, responding to questions about price and confidently closing sales. As the lead staff member on Saturdays, you will oversee daily gallery trading, normally working alongside one volunteer. You must also be happy working independently when required. Previous experience in proactive, face-to-face sales is essential, with proven ability to engage customers, convert interest into purchases and achieve sales targets. Applicants must genuinely enjoy selling, be confident discussing prices and closing higher-value sales, and have excellent communication and relationship-building skills. The successful candidate must be commercially minded, proactive, reliable and comfortable working independently, while coordinating a volunteer and taking responsibility for Saturday trading. Regular Saturday availability, including the busy festive period, flexibility for additional paid holiday cover and the ability to start immediately are essential. Applicants must be able to travel reliably to Farnham. Experience in art galleries, jewellery, interiors or premium retail is desirable, alongside knowledge of contemporary art and craft. Take responsibility for achieving agreed Saturday sales targets, proactively engaging visitors and converting interest into purchases of original art and contemporary craft, including higher-value work. Confidently present artworks, explain their value, respond to customer questions and close sales professionally. Build relationships with new and returning customers, encourage repeat purchases and follow up serious sales enquiries. Promote the Own Art scheme and other purchasing options. Lead Saturday gallery operations, normally working alongside one volunteer, and coordinate occasional freelance support. Be confident working independently when required. Manage sales transactions, payments, opening and closing procedures, and daily cashing-up. Maintain attractive displays, excellent gallery presentation and the safe handling of artworks. Record sales and customer enquiries accurately, report trading results and communicate important matters. Please email your CV and a short covering letter to [email protected] by Sunday 15 November 2026, by 5pm. Your application should outline your relevant sales experience, including an example of a significant sale you personally secured and how you closed it. Please confirm your earliest start date, Saturday availability, ability to provide additional festive and holiday cover, and practical travelling arrangements to Farnham. Applications will be reviewed as received, and interviews may take place before the closing date. Immediate start preferred. New Ashgate Gallery is committed to equal opportunities and particularly welcomes applications from people from ethnic minority backgrounds.Job Summary
