The Institut français du Royaume-Uni is hiring a Junior Projectionist for the Ciné Lumière, its two-screen cinema with over 1,000 screenings a year. The role involves supporting the technical and operational delivery of screenings and cultural events.

Job Description

The Institut fran ais du Royaume-Uni is looking to hire a Junior Projectionist for the Cin Lumi re. The cinema has two screening rooms. Its curated programming combines French, European and world cinema, with an emphasis on French film premieres and exclusive screenings with the presence of filmmakers and talent, art-house films, film festivals, classics, Q&As and special events.

As a Junior Projectionist, you will support the technical and operational delivery of cinema screenings and cultural events.

Collaboration

  • Work in coordination with projection and technical teams
  • Work closely with front-of-house staff, particularly during evenings and weekends (including sectorial attach s, the events and logistics coordinator, box office staff, and ushers);
  • Contribute to ensuring a high standard of customer service and assist in resolving customer-related issues when they arise;
  • Anticipate and manage priorities, and escalate any technical or operational issues that may disrupt the smooth running of screenings or events to the appropriate team member.

The Junior Projectionist will work under the supervision of the Head of Technical and Digital Media and the senior projectionists, and in coordination with the Deputy Director, the Deputy Secretary General, the Cinema Programmer, and the School Activities Manager

Working hours fall primarily outside regular office times.

Shift pattern (subject to discussion):

This is a full-time position of 35 hours per week, primarily scheduled over 4 days from Tuesday to Friday, between 11:00am and 11:00pm. Working hours may vary depending on the cinema's schedule and operational needs.

Job Requirements

Skills & competencies

We are looking for a reliable and resourceful team member with the following skills and attributes:

  • Strong interest in cinema, AV, or live event production
  • A reliable, practical, and solution-focused team player
  • Strong willingness to learn projection technologies and standards
  • Comfortable working evenings and weekends
  • English fluency (French is a bonus)
  • Strong team spirit and communication skills;
  • Valid First Aid and Fire Marshal certification (preferred);
  • Fluent in English (French is an advantage);
  • Ability to prioritise, remain calm under pressure, and handle unexpected situations;
  • Flexible, punctual, and versatile;
  • Able to work independently and report clearly and accurately.

Job Responsibilities

Duties

You will assist in the technical and logistical preparation of cinema screenings at the Cin Lumi re, supporting the projection team with the following tasks:

  • Managing the receipt and return of film prints (DCPs, 35mm, 16mm);
  • Operating digital cinema projectors and DCP servers;
  • Ingesting DCPs and KDMs, and creating or editing playlists;
  • Handling audiovisual equipment, such as Blu-ray players, scalers, sound desks, microphones, lighting systems, and computers;
  • Occasionally operating 35mm and 16mm film projectors;
  • Supporting the technical setup for other cultural events organised by the Institut (such as live performances, talks, concerts, and conferences).

Health, safety and emergency procedures

  • Follow all health and safety protocols
  • Support emergency evacuation as instructed (training provided)
  • Ensure that internal rules, safety protocols, and regulations are consistently followed.
