Lambeth Wind Orchestra is seeking a new Conductor, starting September 2026. We are a lively, friendly and inclusive community concert band with approximately 40 members. Established in 2008, we are distinguished by the diversity of our repertoire and our sense of the band as a community.

We are a lively, friendly and inclusive community concert band with approximately 40 members, rehearsing on Thursday evenings 7.30-9.30pm in Herne Hill. Established in 2008, we are distinguished by the diversity of our repertoire and our sense of the band as a community. The minimum standard required of players is Grade 6, though most members are at a considerably higher level and we do like to be stretched! Our repertoire covers contemporary wind band music, pop, musical theatre, and arrangements of classical works. Recent programmes have focused on highlighting contemporary wind band music, music themed around animals, dance music and pieces from around the world. We present at least two formal concerts each year, in the Spring and Autumn, but our busiest time is over the summer, since we are particularly renowned for our lively and engaging outdoor performances. We also present an informal Christmas concert and busk for charity at least once a year. Fundraising and outreach into the community are important to us. Job Requirements

Essential criteria: personable and a good communicator; able to create a happy environment in rehearsals; both supportive and demanding in leading our music making; an excellent musician; enthusiastic about community music making; able to recommend and advise on repertoire. some conducting experience (though we are prepared to consider individuals with potential); the ability to play at least one wind or brass instrument; presentation skills and the ability to engage our audiences. Desirable criteria: An ability to arrange music.

Job Responsibilities

Your responsibilities would include: planning and conducting rehearsals; conducting and presenting at concerts; recommending repertoire; attending 4-5 committee meetings per annum (not renumerated) Contractual arrangements The Conductor will be engaged on a self-employed basis and will therefore be responsible for their own income tax and National Insurance contributions. We will pay up to £85 per two hour rehearsal (approx 4 rehearsals a month), depending on experience and qualifications, plus concert fees.
