Are you highly motivated with a passion for developing and delivering learning and connecting young people to collections and heritage stories? We are looking for someone with experience of museum learning and engagement to review our handling collection and our learning work, with a specific focus on schools. Our goal is to ensure our learning programmes remain relevant, accessible, and impactful for everyone.

Wycombe Museum has been delivering excellent learning and engagement experiences for many years. We are looking to build a more flexible model for learning going forward, allowing us to make the best use of our existing resources and maximise our engagement work.

You will be working with our excellent wide-ranging handling collection of real historic artefacts and work to ensure it is fit for its role as part of a small and dynamic learning programme, meaning as many young people as possible can benefit from historic objects from their local area. In addition, you will review our learning programmes, focusing on key schools' sessions and informal learning sessions, to make a stream-lined learning plan for the future. Finally, you will undertake delivery of some of these programmes as part of ongoing museum delivery.

You will be working as part of a small and dynamic team at Wycombe Museum focused on encouraging collections engagement for all within our area.

Job Requirements

  • Reviewing Wycombe Museum's handling collection and loan boxes -and producing a definitive set which can be used for all our learning work
  • Developing documentation and resources to accompany the loan boxes
  • Reviewing the museum's formal education programme and making an agreed session list with associated resources and handling collections
  • Reviewing the museum's informal learning programme and bringing together past sessions to make a plan for future sustainable delivery
  • Working with the curatorial team and our freelance learning team to ensure our sessions and resources are well-informed by expert source
  • Delivering selected sessions for school pupils in conjunction with our freelance team and supporting the informal learning programme
  • Evaluating the learning programme as part of the museum's commitment to continuous improvement
  • Providing ongoing support and training to learning volunteers
  • Supporting marketing of learning and engagement events, work on museum project

Job Responsibilities

Education

  • History or other relevant degree OR relevant work experience
  • Continued professional development and awareness of current museum trends

Experience

  • Experience of developing and delivering schools and informal learning sessions
  • Experience of working with handling collections
  • Working as part of a team including volunteers, staff and freelancers
  • Working in a museum or heritage environment
  • Evaluating learning programmes

Skills and knowledge

  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills
  • Understanding the needs of different audiences
  • Flexibility and ability to work independently or a with a team
  • Good IT skills
  • Understanding of how to create creative and engaging activities, workshops, and interpretation
  • Understanding of a local history collection
