Pendon Museum is currently seeking a Learning Officer to help us to develop and deliver a learning programme to engage and help us to reach schools and families.

Job Description

Pendon Museum is a museum of rural life and transport in the 1930s located in South Oxfordshire. Pendon recaptures the scenes from the English countryside as it was in the 1920s and 1930s and features some of the finest model landscapes, buildings and transport models ever constructed. The first building in the model was started in 1935 by the Museum's founder, Roye England, and the model is still in progress today. Within the modelling community, Pendon Museum has an international reputation for excellence. In recognition of its significance, Pendon became an accredited museum in 2016.

Pendon Museum Trust is currently seeking a Learning Officer to help us to develop and deliver a learning programme to engage and help us to reach schools and families.

This is an exciting time to become involved with the museum. Whilst we have elements of an informal learning programme including family trails, junior modelling sessions during the half term and school holidays, and pre-school sessions, the successful candidate will have an opportunity to develop the formal learning programme from scratch including

  • Developing the learning programme including session plans, resources and build relationships with local schools
  • Recruiting and managing volunteers to support the delivery of the programme
  • Administering the programme including taking bookings
  • Monitoring and evaluating programmes, including producing regular reports on performance and feedback
  • Support the delivery of informal Learning activities for young people and families as well as Adults.

Contract: One year contract with possibility for extension on a 0.8FTE basis

Hours: 28 hours per week

Work location: Hybrid working

Salary: £19, 200 per annum (£24,000 pro rata)

DBS: The post will be offered subject to a successful DBS check

Job Requirements

Essential skills

  • Experience developing and running learning programmes in a museum, heritage organisation, or visitor attraction.
  • A track record of creating audience-focused, inclusive learning opportunities.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding practices and Equalities Act compliance.
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of working with children and/or young people in a formal or informal education setting.
  • Experience of developing Learning activities for a range of audiences.
  • Knowledge of the National Curriculum.
  • Understanding of how to plan for and evaluate Learning outcomes.
  • An understanding of the varied opportunities for Learning and participation within a museum or gallery context.
  • Knowledge of effective safeguarding practices.
  • Good communication skills with a warm and friendly manner.
  • The ability to present and communicate new ideas to a range of age groups.
  • Excellent general IT, administrative and organisational skills.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development of the learning programme including developing session plans, resources and building relationships with local schools
  • Recruit and manage volunteers to support the delivery of the programme
  • Administer the programme including taking bookings
  • Communicate with colleagues to co-ordinate with the Museum diary
  • Monitor and evaluate programmes, producing regular reports on performance and feedback
  • Work with the Museum Manager Museum to arrange access for school groups in the Museum
  • Supporting the delivery of informal Learning activities for children, young people and families
  • Supporting administration of the Informal Learning through, producing teaching resources and organising materials
  • Supporting the Marketing team to develop content to promote the Learning programme including producing and mailing out information, updating web content (in collaboration with the Marketing Manager)
  • Maintaining and regularly updating database of schools' contacts
