The National Youth Theatre is looking for a freelance Playing Up Learning Support Advisor to play a key role on our flagship social inclusion programme. Playing Up is an OCN Level 3 accredited 10-month drama training programme, offering young people aged 19 - 25* who are not in Education Employment

Job Description

The Learning Support Advisor will be confident in designing and implementing packages of support for specific learners and have an understanding of the performing arts. They will attend Playing Up classes and offer 1-2-1 support outside of class hours. They will be responsible for identifying support needs and creating a bespoke package of support for each learner. They will also provide compassionate pastoral care to course participants in line with the appropriate guidelines provided by NYT.

Payment Breakdown: £130 per day. £16,510 in total for 127 days. Standard NYT working hours 10am - 6pm.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have at least one year of experience in learning support or teaching in formal education settings (e.g., secondary, HE, FE), and hold a Level 3 qualification or higher. Essential skills include understanding neurodiversity, offering 1:1 and group support, and experience with accreditation systems. Strong communication, IT proficiency (Zoom, Teams), and organizational skills are required. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to inclusion, diversity, and safeguarding, with the ability to design bespoke support plans using diagnostic tools. Desirable traits include experience with marginalized youth, arts education, and pastoral care. Patience, professionalism, and a can-do attitude are key.

Job Responsibilities

The Learning Support Advisor will support young people undertaking the Level 3 OCN Access to HE Diploma in Theatre Arts. Responsibilities include identifying learning needs, creating tailored support plans, delivering 1:1 and group sessions, and providing pastoral care. They will use diagnostic tools and EHCPs to guide support, adapt session content for accessibility, and monitor learner progress. The role involves collaborating with tutors, maintaining records, and ensuring inclusive practice. Advisors will also attend NYT productions, participate in training, and uphold safeguarding standards. Strong communication, organization, and a commitment to equity are essential.
