We’re looking for an experienced Lighting Designer to lead the design and execution of lighting for Nullspace Motel, an immersive, hybrid performance project.

Job Description

We're looking for an experienced Lighting Designer to lead the design and execution of lighting for Nullspace Motel, an immersive, hybrid performance project. You'll be responsible for crafting the visual atmosphere of the show through light, working closely with directors, designers, and technical teams to create dynamic, responsive environments that support storytelling and audience experience.

Commitment: 7.5 days (1 day = 8hrs)
Fee: £250 per day (Total fee: £1,875)

Timeline: August to November 2025

Testing Phase at ACCA in Brighton

1 day on site at ACCA for testing (in person): Friday 8th August
FEE: 1 day total @ £250/day = £250

Presentation in Brighton

1.5 day prep (remote) to create a lighting design 1 day rehearsal/get in - 21st October (in person) 1 day show - 22nd October (in person)
FEE: 3.5 days total @ £250/day = £875 Lighting rental budget: £500

Cambridge Presentation

0.5 day prep (remote)
0.5 day get in - 5th November (in person)
1 day show - 6th November (in person)
1 day show/deinstall - 7th November (in person) FEE: 3 days total @ £250/day = £750
Lighting rental budget: £490

All travel and accommodation will be provided.

Job Requirements

Essential

  • Proven experience designing for live performance, ideally immersive or interdisciplinary formats
  • Strong understanding of lighting systems and programming
  • Ability to work creatively within unconventional or site-specific venues
  • Collaborative mindset with strong communication skills across departments
  • Comfortable using digital collaboration tools like Asana and Discord

Desirable

  • Experience with interactive or hybrid performance technologies
  • A driving license
  • Worked in unconventional or site-specific venues

Job Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver a complete lighting plan tailored to immersive and non-traditional performance spaces

  • Collaborate with the creative team to realize a lighting aesthetic that supports narrative, interactivity, and

    environment

  • Oversee installation, focusing, programming, and testing of all lighting systems

  • Operate lighting during performances or train operators as required

  • Integrate lighting with other technical elements (video, sound, sensors) in a responsive system

  • Produce lighting plots, cue sheets, equipment lists, and documentation for touring or remounting

  • Ensure safety, compliance, and best practices in all lighting work
