Brief

Preserve the rave and commemorate London's club culture and electronic music history from the 80s - 2000s with this Mega Mega Mega curatorial opportunity. Platforming Romford's contributions to this significant subculture in London, you will engage with local stories, histories, commission new work, work with archival materials to create an immersive exhibition with a permanent archival collection.

We're looking for a curator with professional and/or lived experience - this could include working in the clubbing industry, promoting parties, as a musician, or with an avid interest in club culture - to lead the conceptualisation, development, and delivery of this ambitious exhibition. The successful candidate will be responsible for realising their curatorial vision, designing a community engagement strategy, commercial aspects of the project and with the leadership of the Havering London team you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of a permanent archival collection.

Project Timeline

The curator will be expected to commit to this project over a 10-month period, structured as follows:

Research and Development Phase (8 months): Conduct research, work with a community engagement worker to develop and implement a community engagement strategy. Develop exhibition concept and content [including object/artwork selection, interpretive materials, and exhibition narrative].

Exhibition Phase (2 months): Design the exhibition layout and direct installation in collaboration with production management, finalise exhibition materials, participate in marketing activities with the Havering London team, and be present at the opening event to speak about the exhibition. Your contractual obligation ends after the opening of the exhibition.

Compensation:

  • Curator fee: £7,500 (£250 day rate, 3 days per month)

Job Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Professional and/or lived experience in club culture including working in the clubbing industry, promoting parties, as a musician, DJ, or as an active participant in the scene
  • Demonstrable curatorial experience with a strong portfolio of successful exhibitions, projects or events
  • Knowledge of London's club culture and electronic music history including Romford's contributions
  • Experience in engaging public audiences
  • Strong project management skills with ability to meet deadlines and budgets
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities

Desired Experience

  • Previous work with music or cultural heritage projects
  • Knowledge of co-creation methods
  • Knowledge of London's diverse music venues and cultural spaces including Romford
  • Commercial acumen with demonstrable experience in revenue- generating exhibitions, projects or events
  • Established networks and authentic relationships within the electronic music community

Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

1. Exhibition Concept & Realisation

  • Develop and execute a compelling curatorial concept that captures the essence of Romford's electronic music and club culture heritage
  • Research and identify key historical moments, venues, artists, and cultural movements to feature
  • Design an immersive visitor experience that brings the era to life through innovative display techniques
  • Oversee the creation of new commissions and interpretive materials
  • Collaborate with freelance practitioners to deliver the immersive elements
  • Ensure historical accuracy while maintaining engaging storytelling

2. Community Engagement Strategy

  • Design a community engagement strategy that is forward looking

3. Commercial Strategy & Revenue Generation

  • Havering London will support you with developing a commercial aspect of the exhibition to achieve a ticket sales target of £30,000 representing a key performance indicator for project success
