Milton Keynes City Council are looking to appoint an experienced artist, creative practitioner or outdoor arts company to develop and deliver a new outdoor festival parade, which will form part of the Midsummer Festival programme taking place on Sunday 21st June 2026. The total budget is £20,000.

Job Description

Taking place on Sunday 21st June, 10am - 8pm, the third edition of the Midsummer Festival in Milton Keynes features a free, fun-packed family-friendly programme inspired by the summer solstice. Located on Midsummer Boulevard, which was built to famously align with the rising and setting sun, the festival transforms both the road and surrounding public realm into joyful, colour filled stage, hosting performances, creative workshops, concerts, art installations, a fantastic street food offer and more. www.midsummer-festival.co.uk The Festival Parade commission opportunity can be summarised as: Develop and deliver a high-energy, celebratory, impactful and engaging outdoor festival parade, suitable for a family audience. The expectation is that the parade would be performed twice during the Festival, an afternoon parade and a repeat presentation to form the festival's closing event. Proposals should demonstrate how the work can be reset and performed twice within this timeframe. The parade will form two key moments within the Midsummer Festival programme and the scale and the ambition of the piece will need to consider this. To take inspiration from the various themes and ideas inherent within Midsummer including; Midsummer folklore, summer solstice and local myths, stories and legends. The parade will be experienced by the Midsummer audience, a shared public experience rather than audience involvement. Prioritise high production , theatrical impact and an overall visually compelling piece that should be seen and heard throughout the festival footprint. The commission should include collaboration with a minimum of two locally based community groups. Proposals should be designed for outdoor presentation along Midsummer Boulevard in central Milton Keynes which is closed to all traffic for the duration of the Festival.

Job Requirements

Milton Keynes City Council seeks an experienced artist or outdoor arts company to create a high impact, visually striking parade for Midsummer Festival on 21 June 2026. The parade must run twice (afternoon and closing event), drawing inspiration from midsummer folklore, solstice themes and local myths. It should deliver strong theatrical production values and be designed for outdoor presentation along Midsummer Boulevard. The commission must involve collaboration with at least two local community groups and be suitable, safe and resilient for family audiences in a busy public realm. Budget must cover all fees, production, materials, technical needs, transport, installation, insurance and engagement activity. From April, the selected artist will attend fortnightly development meetings. Applicants must submit an approach, examples of work, budget, timeline, CV, availability, referees and insurance. Deadline: 21st April 2026, 5pm.

Job Responsibilities

The commissioned artist or company will design and deliver a high quality outdoor parade for Midsummer Festival on 21 June 2026. Responsibilities include creating a visually impactful, family friendly parade inspired by midsummer themes, and ensuring it can be performed twice during the festival. The artist must collaborate with at least two local community groups and produce a work suitable, safe and weather resilient for the public realm along Midsummer Boulevard. They must manage all aspects of production, including R&D, materials, fabrication, technical needs, transport, installation, de installation, access and insurance. The commissioned practitioner will attend fortnightly meetings from April and work closely with MKCC and festival teams to refine and finalise the parade. A clear budget, timeline and documentation must be provided as part of the commission delivery. The Parade must comply with all relevant heath and safety legislation.
