Description

Job Description

UCL is a globally leading university based in central London, founded in 1826 with a pioneering ethos that links academic excellence with civic responsibility. It spans a broad range of disciplines, from biomedical science to the built environment and fine arts.

UCL's Cultural & Community Engagement team, part of the Vice Provost's Office for Strategy, plays a key role in developing inclusive public engagement and cultural programming at UCL East, at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The campus is designed to be open, accessible, and connected to local communities.

A central initiative is the UCL Public Art Policy, which supports commissioned artworks that spark critical dialogue and build interdisciplinary relationships. In alignment with this, artist Emma Smith has been commissioned to create a public artwork for the UCL Multi Lab, a new temporary research facility opening in Autumn 2025. The Lab will host research in areas such as life sciences, materials discovery, and environmental studies, and feature innovative lab spaces like greenhouses and vertical farms.

The artwork will serve as a community-facing platform to foster dialogue between researchers, local residents, and creative practitioners, encouraging long-term, mutually beneficial engagement.

UCL is recruiting a Community Engagement Officer to support the delivery of a major public art commission at our new UCL Multi Lab facility, opening in Autumn 2025 at UCL East. Working closely with Emma Smith, the UCL Cultural and Community Engagement team, and UCL researchers and students, you'll co-develop and deliver an inclusive engagement strategy that brings local voices into the heart of the project.

Please note, this is a part-time (0.4/ 2-days per week) fixed term contract available for 12-months on a hybrid basis at our UCL East Campus (min 2-days onsite) at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview during the week commencing 15th September 2025.

Job Requirements

As a Community Engagement professional, you have experience of community engagement in geographical areas with diverse demographics and high levels of deprivation. You have both developed and delivered art-based public engagement, specifically within research activities and preferably with a focus on learning and development for the artists and researchers involved. Additionally, you're skilled at building long-term and mutually beneficial relationships with community partners.

You will also be able to demonstrate the following (although not limited to):

  • Project management experience including developing monitoring and evaluation processes and frameworks and managing budgets.
  • Experience bringing both the arts and research together, and having the knowledge and understanding of best practice in public and community engagement, ideally within a higher education sector.
  • An ability to plan, prioritise and manage and demanding and variety workload.

Job Responsibilities

In this role, you'll:

  • Build and nurture relationships with east London community groups and residents
  • Design and coordinate creative engagement activities that reflect local interests
  • Support the development, delivery, and evaluation of the engagement programme
  • Facilitate collaboration between the artist, researchers, students, and the wider community
  • Help communicate project outcomes and learning through blogs, case studies and events

You'll play a key part in embedding a culture of engagement across the UCL Multi Lab and ensuring the project has a lasting, positive impact. Flexible working is offered, with occasional evening and weekend work required.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a high-profile arts and research initiative in one of London's most diverse and dynamic communities.
