We are looking for a friendly and efficient person with excellent communication skills to work independently on Friday to Sunday, to welcome visitors upon arrival, support an enjoyable visitor experience, invigilate the exhibition and ensure the smooth running of the gallery and the small shop.
Founded in 1882, The Royal College of Music (RCM) is a world leading music conservatoire with a prestigious history and contemporary outlook. Our excellence was recognised by the 2025 QS World University Rankings, in which we were ranked as the global No. 1 institution for both Music and Performing Arts. The College has held this world-leading place in Performing Arts for the four successive years, while Music is a new subject introduced to the rankings in 2024.
The College also holds a designated collection of over 14,000 historical musical instruments, portraits of musicians, early prints and drawings related to the history of British and European music. Part of the collection is on display in a new gallery, recently redeveloped with the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and open to the public six days a week.
Our ideal candidate will have the following attributes:
- You should be professional, friendly and ensure all visitors feel welcome in the Museum.
- You should be fluent in English and able to engage at an elementary level with visitors speaking other languages.
- You will be confident in having primary responsibility in the invigilation of a museum gallery.
- You will be able to work collaboratively, alternating relatively quiet moments with times of increased pressure.
- You will be able to deal in a friendly but firm manner with unexpected situations that might arise in the Museum.
- You will be able to manage first aid and emergency situations.
- You will be passionate about music and musical heritage.
- You will be proficient in the use of the Microsoft office package including Teams.
- You will have a commitment to valuing and celebrating diversity and to proactively advancing equality and belonging in the Museum.

- Level 2 qualification in literacy and numeracy (GCSE/NVQ Level 2) or equivalent
- First Aid certificate (or willing to be trained)
- Confident using Microsoft Office package including Teams
- Experience in customer service, front of house or a similar customer facing role
- Diligence and compliance in security matters and health and safety regulations
- Excellent administration and organisational skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Proficiency in MS Office Suites
- Experience in cash handling and till work
- Ability to unpack deliveries and move stock between locations
- Ability to identify and proactively solve problems
- Excellent team-working and communication skills
- Professional approach to customer service

- To take a proactive role in supporting the day-to-day management of all activities relating to the Museum, including opening/closing procedures, managing individual and group bookings, and facilitating shop sales.
- To assist visitors with any queries or requests, providing pragmatic and efficient solutions where possible.
- To assist visitors, audiences and members of the public with enquiries or requests, ensuring high levels of customer service at all times.
- To maintain high standards in the exhibition spaces through proactively addressing issues, reporting incidents and ensuring Museum spaces are presented as intended including ensuring soundscapes and digital systems are running correctly in both the Galleries and the Weston Discovery Centre, reporting issues to the Museum team as required.
